The Mainland - Saturday

May 29, 2010 23:18

Trips to the mainland were few and far between for Kyle. The whole point of being in Fandom was to stay in Fandom out of sight, out of mind and out of trouble more or less. Sometimes side trips were necessary and an acceptable risk. Today was one such trip, which had two purposes: a lesson with Jack the detective and a trade with Jack the ( Read more... )

Lesson With Jack weetinyreese May 29 2010, 13:19:24 UTC
They were near a busy street, bustling with the usual mix of locals and tourists. Kyle tried to look inconspicuous but was probably anything but. "What's the first thing to remember?" he asked.

"The very first?" Jack asked, looking down the street to either side to get a better sense of the neighborhood. "Walk the way everyone else does. Think of it as a school of fish -- we're just two more fish in the ocean."

He set off at a deliberate pace, similar to how quickly the locals were walking. "The thing I would have told you before we got here was not to dress in anything flashy. Someone in a red shirt is much easier to pick out than someone in black." Jack himself had dressed in an olive plaid shirt, khaki pants and sneakers, and pulled a cap casually over his hair. He could have been anyone. He gave Kyle an appraising look. "Let me get a good look at you."

Kyle rarely wore anything that stood out. Today it was blue jeans, a black t-shirt and his grayish/drab green jacket with the hood pulled up. He held his hands out to his side to let Jack get a good look. "Is this okay?"

"Perfect. You can take off the jacket or pull your hood down if you want a quick change," Jack decreed, still keeping up with the crowd. "What you need to think about is what other people would remember. For me, it's the height, the hair and the accent. Can't grow taller, but I can leave on a hat and try not to say too much. You work with what you have."

Black market deals probably belonged in dark alleys or in abandoned warehouses. The guy Kyle had a meeting with didn't work that way. The meeting was about five minutes away and would take place in a diner around the corner. Kyle checked the time. "If this works the way it's supposed to work, you won't have to do anything," he told Jack.

Jack nodded once. "And what if it goes wrong?" he asked. "Should I get help, or jump into the fight?"

"Do you know how to fight?"

Jack shrugged. "I don't do it often, but I know enough to take care of myself."

Against a normal human opponent, anyhow. Someone highly trained or with superpowers would make fairly short work of him.
