The Mainland - Saturday

May 29, 2010 23:18

Trips to the mainland were few and far between for Kyle. The whole point of being in Fandom was to stay in Fandom out of sight, out of mind and out of trouble more or less. Sometimes side trips were necessary and an acceptable risk. Today was one such trip, which had two purposes: a lesson with Jack the detective and a trade with Jack the ( Read more... )

Lesson With Jack weetinyreese May 29 2010, 13:19:24 UTC
They were near a busy street, bustling with the usual mix of locals and tourists. Kyle tried to look inconspicuous but was probably anything but. "What's the first thing to remember?" he asked.

"The very first?" Jack asked, looking down the street to either side to get a better sense of the neighborhood. "Walk the way everyone else does. Think of it as a school of fish -- we're just two more fish in the ocean."

He set off at a deliberate pace, similar to how quickly the locals were walking. "The thing I would have told you before we got here was not to dress in anything flashy. Someone in a red shirt is much easier to pick out than someone in black." Jack himself had dressed in an olive plaid shirt, khaki pants and sneakers, and pulled a cap casually over his hair. He could have been anyone. He gave Kyle an appraising look. "Let me get a good look at you."

Kyle rarely wore anything that stood out. Today it was blue jeans, a black t-shirt and his grayish/drab green jacket with the hood pulled up. He held his hands out to his side to let Jack get a good look. "Is this okay?"

"Perfect. You can take off the jacket or pull your hood down if you want a quick change," Jack decreed, still keeping up with the crowd. "What you need to think about is what other people would remember. For me, it's the height, the hair and the accent. Can't grow taller, but I can leave on a hat and try not to say too much. You work with what you have."

With a glance down, Kyle frowned but tried to keep walking he knew what he was doing. He was only marginally successful. "I don't know what people would notice."

"Nothing about you jumps out at me," Jack said, twisting to dodge a lady carrying flowers. "It's a gift. Don't do anything stupid like dye your hair purple and you'd be fine."

"You should walk faster," he added. "We aren't going anywhere in particular, are we?"

He sped up, trying to find a rhythm to follow. "Not unless you know of a place with good milkshakes. We don't have to be anywhere for a few hours. What do you do if you think the person you're following is working out they're being followed?"

Jack had settled on a rhythm that was well in pace with most of the people on the street. "We'll find a diner," he said. "And it depends. If you have time to try again later, drop back. Go into a shop, take a turn, do something to reassure them it's just been a coincidence. If you know where they're going it's likely you can catch up again later, anyhow."

Kyle nodded. "And if they try to lose you, like going into a store or something, keep walking?"

"Usually," Jack nodded. "You can go into another shop on the block and wait, then pick up when they leave, too. It all depends on how important it is."

He turned a corner, almost at random. "If they confront you, act as confused and innocent as possible. Most people don't want a big scene in public, so usually it won't turn into a fight."

"Where'd you learn to do all of this? I know you said something about a detective."

"My guardian," Jack confirmed. "He took me in when I was seven. He's considered one of the best in his field, at home. And he spent most of the last decade teaching me what he could."

He wasn't bragging; it was just a fact. "Not much use for it on the island, though."

"Not a lot of detecting to do," Kyle nodded. "Is that what you're going to do when you leave? Detective work?"

"I hope to eventually," Jack said. "Law school first, though. It seems to be an easier field to get into."

He smiled slightly at Kyle. "What about you? What has you intereste din this?"

"I don't really know how to deal with people being involved in what I do if they're not part of my unit or bystanders. I think that might be changing."

[OOC: Absolutely! The deal in the other thread ~handwavily~ goes off without a hitch!]

Jack nodded once. "You never need to be too open, though," he suggested.
