Jensen woke up with an urgent need to use the bathroom. He really, really didn’t want to get up out of bed, and lay for a moment hoping to convince his bladder that the need wasn’t that immediate and if it would only let him go back to sleep he’d take care of it first thing in the morning. His bladder wasn’t convinced.
With a weary groan, Jensen reluctantly slid out from under the covers and sat up. He refused to turn on the lights because if he stumbled around in the dark to take care of business it was more likely he’d be able to sleep immediately when he crawled back into bed. Jensen was more exhausted now than he’d ever been; even in that last, crazy year of shooting Season 5, he hadn’t been as bone weary as he’d been in the last six months. And, it was safe to say, he’d never been happier.
Bathroom found, bladder relieved, Jensen turned to go back to bed. Even with no lights on, his eyes had adjusted enough to see that Jared’s side of the bed was empty. Although every fiber in his body was screaming for him to slide back into bed, yelling “It’s not your night!” a soft smile transformed Jensen’s face and he followed his heart down the hallway to the nursery.
Jensen knew right where he would find them. He gently pushed the door to the baby’s room open wide so he could get a better look. Jensen leaned against the doorframe and gazed with a happy heart upon his family. The soft light from night-light bathed the scene in a familiar glow. It was Jared’s night to do the late feeding, and he never missed an opportunity to snuggle with their little girl. He had his lanky frame stretched out in the old-fashioned rocking chair next to the crib. Their angel was tucked up against Jared’s shoulder, looking impossibly sweet and tiny, sleeping peacefully under the weight of her daddy’s protective hand.
Jared’s head was tipped back against the chair, eyes closed and a serene expression on his face. But the rocking of the chair and the slow movement of his hand on the baby’s back was proof he wasn’t sleeping. In all the time he’d known Jared, through friendship, attraction, flirting, sexing, coupling and commitment, Jensen thought Jared never looked more appealing than with a baby on his chest like that; but this time it was their baby in their home, and nothing would every make a sweeter picture.
Padding quietly into the room, Jensen approached the rocking chair. Jared didn’t open his eyes, but a smile creased his face as Jensen approached. Just like Jared could never pass up an opportunity for snuggling, Jensen couldn’t resist kisses. Leaning close enough to hear the soft snuffing of the baby’s breath against Jared’s shoulder, Jensen tenderly kissed the crown of her downy head. He stayed there for a moment, breathing in that baby smell, once again awash in the realization that this miracle was his.
Straightening up slightly, Jensen placed his hand on the baby’s back on top of Jared’s. Then he leaned across and pressed his lips against the crown of Jared’s head. He stayed there for a moment, breathing in that Jared smell, once again awash in the realization that this was their life and overcome with the joy of that knowledge.
Jared’s fingers twined with Jensen’s as he stood up next to the rocking chair. “Go back to bed, Jen.” Jared whispered. “I’ll be in soon.”
Jensen leaned in and whispered a kiss on Jared’s lips. “Love you.”
“Love you too.”
Jensen took his hand off of the baby’s back and cupped his palm around her head. Placing one last kiss on her head, Jensen pulled away and headed back toward the hallway. He’d stay awake until Jared joined him, then they’d fall asleep twined together, a light in the night for one another.
