“So how do you like your Christmas gift?” Rodney McKay beamed, bright blue eyes shining as he bounced impatiently.

John Sheppard stared down at the official document in his hand in bemused wonder. “It’s really happened. DADT is gone.” Hiding a grin, he put on his best concerned expression as he turned to look at his excited lover. “I’m not sure if I should be thrilled to be with the smartest man in every galaxy or concerned that I’m with a potential homicidal maniac. Did you really threaten to blow up those Senators?”

McKay was instantly affronted. “I did not. I simply explained how skilled I was at building bombs. It’s not my fault if they’re easily spooked. They asked about my work and it wasn’t as if I could explain about Stargates and aliens so I focused on weapons. I’ll have you know they all voted according to their conscience.  Anyway, it wasn’t as if the USA could stay in the dark ages forever. Sooner or later they had to catch up to the rest of us in the civilised world.”

That prompted the appearance of the patented Sheppard smirk. “And by civilised world you mean Canada.”

“Of course.” Rodney raised shocked eyebrows. Surely it went without saying.

John shifted his feet restlessly, suddenly nervous. He hated meaningful conversations at the best of times and now he was actually going to ask where their relationship was going. Oh God, he truly was turning into the twelve year old girl Rodney regularly accused him of being. He shrugged off the fear that the universe might just end if John Sheppard discussed his feelings and forced himself to man up.

“So...  are we going to tell people now?” The drawled question was deliberately non-committal.

Startled blue eyes met his. “About us?”

For a genius McKay could be frustratingly oblivious. “No, Rodney. About the history of Canadian civilisation and it’s superiority to the rest of the world. Of course, about us!”

Rodney seemed genuinely shocked as if this possibility had never occurred to him. “I wasn’t sure you’d want anyone to know. I mean we don’t have to tell just because we can. Not that I don’t want people to know we’re together. Because I do. I mean... It’s just...”

John grabbed wildly gesturing hands and silenced babbling lips with a gentle kiss. “Breathe Rodney. I love you. I’ll be proud to have everyone know you’re mine.”

Rodney flushed with pleasure even as he pulled away grumbling. “Oh enough with the caveman act.”

John lounged against the wall in a position he’d calculated drew Rodney’s full (and extremely appreciative) attention in 95% of situations. “You know it turns you on McKay.” He deliberately licked his lips and tilted his head.

Those beautiful blue eyes darkened and Rodney’s voice was husky even as he retorted.  “Whatever, Flyboy.” He dragged his gaze from John’s tempting lips and began to plot. “So we’re going to tell people. We need to approach this carefully. Everyone’s bound to be shocked. We’ll have to handle it carefully, consider how best to approach each individual.”

Yippee. Just what John needed. More conversations about his feelings... “Maybe we could get Chuck to make a city-wide announcement.” He suggested half hopefully.

Rodney shot him his best ‘You are too stupid to exist’ look. Which Sheppard found much more entertaining when it was aimed at McKay’s scientists. “Oh that’s a brilliant idea. Why don’t we just release a sex-tape on the network and be done with it.”

That was enough to bring John forward in alarm. “You said you’d destroyed all the copies!”

“Yes, yes. Not one copy left. I promised didn’t I?” Rodney was the picture of innocence. Which was suspicious in itself...

“Rodney.” If anyone ever saw that tape John would have to kill them, then Rodney, then himself. The things he let McKay talk him into!

Rodney avoided John’s steely gaze. So maybe he’d saved one (heavily encrypted) copy but what Sheppard didn’t know couldn’t get Rodney killed. Better to change the subject quickly. “We’ll tell Teyla and Ronon first of course. And then I suppose I should tell Jennifer. She really shouldn’t hear it from anyone else.” Mentioning Keller was always guaranteed to deflect John’s attention.

John folded his arms sulkily as he leaned back against the wall. “That’ll be fun.”

Rodney began pacing as he considered strategies. “You’ll need to tell Lorne and I should tell Radek. Mmm, maybe I should make up a schedule. You know, spread them out so we can deal with each reaction before moving on to the next.”

John rolled his eyes in fond exasperation. “Sure Rodney, you do that. Later”

“Later?”

John pulled his astrophysicist close and whispered softly. “Much later.”
