sorry if this is out of place, but... texpat_cymru February 17 2009, 09:32:42 UTC
I would say that unless you have unusual, extenuating circumstances, an immigration lawyer is a waste of money. I have heard a lot of horror stories about immigration lawyers not doing what needs to be done.
All the available forms, with examples of how to fill them out, along with timelines and any advice you can possibly need is available on www.visajourney.com
Obviously do whatever makes you more comfortable, but if you have a standard case (especially being English-American) I would recommend using your money elsewhere.

Would you suggest that in our situation? My fiance is a doctor who works for his government (in Panama). He has a 10 year tourist visa to the states (that he got in 2005), and he wants to do his residency there. He's already got his MBA and everything too, plus a savings account, but I'm still worried because a) it's a Latin American country and b) his brother tried to illegally cross the border and was caught and put into detention, and I don't want that to affect HIS chances.

You should ask the people on the forums over at www.visajourney.com, they would be able to give you much better advice than I could about your situation. There are lots of people there with significant others from Latin American countries and lots of them have been approved ( ... )

Narooma! Beautiful!

You could get married anywhere around that part of the south NSW coast, it's just stunning.

I'm a American-Brit pairing, dealing with immigration to bring my fiance to the US (we are almost through with the process! it has taken 8 months so far. hopefully australia is easier for you than the US is)

Only his immediate family is coming to the US for the wedding, but about 15 of our friends from university (I've been living in Wales for 3 years) are coming. We had talked about doing a little (nonlegal) ceremony and reception in Wales before we left for good, but after so many people said they wanted to come to the US we decided to just put all our money into that one.

Good luck with the immigration process. Unfortunately I don't have any advice for someone going to Australia.

I grew up in Narooma and I can tell you right now that it is the most beautiful coast line ever. If you are going to make things official around Christmas time that would be the most perfect opportunity for an outdoor beach weeding. the view is amazing!!!! There are also some nice places depending on what you want for dinner, drinks etc after your ceremony. The Glof Club and the pub with the $1000,000 view are two very good, reasonably priced options both with amazing views and at sunset it is just stunning...

ok sorry.. i just got over excited when you mentioned Narooma.

Good luck with your immigration stuff!
