It would be cheaper for us to buy utensils, plates and glasses from The Dollar Store than to rent them.  A downside is that we'd end up with a bunch of dirty dishes that we and/or our parents would have to clean.  Then again, FH's parents have a dishwasher, so that might not be too bad.  I'm left with the question, what do we do with all those el ( Read more... )

Maybe see if you can find a charity or shelter that could use a lot of dishes & utensils. :)

I came into the same realization with decorations. It would be cheaper for me to buy a bunch of tulle and decorate the headtable and backdrops then to rent the stuff to do it. After I'm done my wedding I have no plan on storing 80 yards of tulle so I'll pass them onto someone for a small cost. You could do the same with the dishes and utensil? Clean them up and pass them on to recover some of your expense.

You could always turn around and sell the tableware through your local wedding coop, craigslist, or ebay... and make up some of the cost.

Paper plates are bad environmentally. Plastic is about the worst manufactured substance out there. If you can, I would encourage you to buy stuff at dollar store -- the cost will probably be about the same.

After the wedding, you can donate it, or sell it.

We discovered it was cheaper to buy drinking glasses and candles from Ikea than to rent them... The downside, of course, is an extra 60 drinking glasses when the wedding's over. I plan to put them in a friend's yard sale in August.

We're having an at-home wedding, with a caterer, and we bought all our own dishes. We've emptied out about 4 cupboards underneath the counter and have put plastic bins in them for the dirty dishes. They'll get dumped in there and stay in there til the wedding is over, then get washed. Out of sight, out of mind! :)
