October 13th wedding

Over the weekend I attended the wedding of two of my friends from college. There were 8 of us girls who all became friends freshman year in New Orleans and have remained close ever since. We've scattered across the country and now only see each other at weddings, which fortunately we have had every few months. I'm now the next in line with my March ( Read more... )

Ooh, it's interesting to hear about more feminist ceremonies, especially since I'm a feminist (and honestly, I can't understand how any woman wouldn't be. But most think feminism is the same as acting crazy, and that's not the truth at all). The only two things I am for SURE doing is having my dad NOT give me away (he'll walk me up, b/c I think it's important to him, but he's not giving me away, if that makes sense) and when we're introduced, it will be as "Mr and Mrs Adam and Serena B" rather than the ridiculous "Mr and Mrs Adam B." Anyone else adding feminist touches?

I'm not really a femminist, but the FH and I are talking about both taking my last name. Partially because it's WAY COOLER than his, and partially because my family name means a lot more to me than his family name does to him. (His family is more into 'well, we're blood. Nothing will ever change that.' And my family is more the 'SAVE THE FAMILY NAME--KEEP IT GOING' type.)

I like that. My friend Hanna and her fiance are doing the same...wait, are you Hanna? =) Haha. My dad freaked out when I told him about this: "I hate it when the woman doesn't take the man's name!" When I asked why, he said "Because the man is dominant, the protector." To which my mom rolled her eyes, and I fought hard to bite my tongue. SO frustrating. I would NEVER marry a man who felt he was "dominant" over me. As for protection, I'm the head of security at my university, so I'm not too worried about that! =) I guess that was a bit of a tangent...

we're both strong feminists. we've considered taking my last name or mushing our names together. we had friends whose last names were harmond and lazel, or something like that, and they ended up as david and allison hazel, which i think rocks. so we're thinking about that. it will depend on how hard it is for him to get his name changed.

my dad is not giving me away either, nor will i be wearing a veil (since it symbolizes virginity and purity and i am neither a virgin nor pure, lol).

we're also writing our own vows based on the "this is a marriage of equals" celtic vows. good stuff.
