This is actually sort of therapeutic because it's putting into easily digestible visual form the sheer fact that PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS ABOUT THINGS, which sometimes I just... forget XD

WHAT THE FUCK YOU ACTUALLY READ GODEL, ESCHER, BACH. AND BEFORE I DID TOO. Sadly, I don't particularly enjoy number theory, but I do enjoy metaphorical talking animals and finding labyrinths where you least expect it. "Levels of reality" omg. I bet this is Dom Cobb's favourite book, even though he secretly only understands half of it and mostly used it to court Mal. (Dom Cobb failed high school math. Dom Cobb always eats his vegetables, except when they are purple).

I... have a strange relationship with characters and likability in that I think I need to like characters more than the average reader -- if a character does something that turns me off, that is it, the entire story is soured for me. I don't mean that I need my characters to be squeaky clean citizens. I can enjoy morally ambiguous characters, and pricks (both kinds). I just mean that I have a personal list of LITTLE THINGS YOU DON'T DO, and crossing that line is one of the quickest way to make me uncomfortable.

Every time I imagine starting Godel, Escher, Bach, I have dreams that I am wrestling a six foot tall platypus. Strangely desirable and yet utterly terrifying? Maybe I will just skim it? It's like recently when I read Barthes, except it was actually just his autobiographical Mourning Diary and not any of his, you know, literary criticism.

NOWHERE NEAR AS WHIMSICAL AS A PLATYPUS, THOUGH. Skimming seems to be the best option, it's what I eventually ended up doing when the number theory got too heavy! Ahhahaha was even his autobiographical writing too much to take in word by word XD

SUCH A MEAN POLL. I demand style AND substance from my stories! But I had to go with style in the end because even the most interesting and well-plotted story in the world will lose me pretty early on if it's badly written.

G,E,B. Luckily I like number theory just enough that I got through it without wanting to bang my head against too many hard surfaces. Rereading it now that I have Inception in my mind could be an interesting exercise!

You are a hero fld;glkah;gla god I was not prepared for that amount of number theory, which, I don't know why I wasn't, I mean, it's not like THE TITLE OF THE BOOK BEGINS WITH "GODEL". All the chapters and sections that are related to recursion made me so happy...!

I will admit to a certain amount of smugness when I actually FINISHED the thing, although I'm sure I didn't grasp it quite as well as the physicist friend who lent me the book in the first place. The recursion was great! As was everything to do with muuuuusic; it made me appreciate Bach a lot more, when previously I had felt slightly sullen towards him for his idea of a good soprano line. Although he's still better than Beethoven. I think Beethoven had a bad formative experience with a soprano and HATED THEM ALL.

Bach appears to be the darling of every writer whose roots lie in science or math... which, I suppose, is pretty self-explanatory. fld;galghkla I hadn't even thought about it from a voice perspective! Are Beethoven's soprano lines, like, IMPOSSIBLE
