Summer challenge: FO + pattern

Jun 25, 2006 19:06

I only have one bandana, and my dog has stolen it from me. It's not her fault really, she's just so much cuter in it than I could ever hope to be. Rather than do the reasonable thing (i.e. buy another stupid bandana), I figured I should knit my solution.

Of course, we all know who's eventually going to claim ownership of the new bandana:

I tried to make the directions as clear and concise as possible, but I'm not sure I did a very good job. =/

Let me know if you think it needs some clarification.

Pattern:

Yarn -- Sugar 'n Cream (100% cotton) in Wine (00015) and Yellow (00010), less than one ball each.
Needles -- US8 straight, US8 dpns, US3 straight (or size to get gauge)
Gauge --
body: 9 sts x 18 rows = 2" square in garter stitch and larger needles
i-cord: doesn't really matter
tie-band: 10 rows = 2" in band pattern

Body
With yellow and larger straight needles, make a slipknot on left needle.
Row 1: kfb
Row 2: sl1, kfb
Row 3: sl1, k1, kfb
Row 4 and every following row: sl1, k to last st, kfb
Switch colors every 10 rows to create the stripes. When you have 8 stripes (4 yellow and 4 wine) put all the stitches onto a scrap piece of yarn.
Weave in ends -- but leave the tail coming out of the live stitches.

I-cord border
With Wine and dpns, CO 3 sts.
Knit as a normal i-cord for 2 rows (see knittinghelp.com if you don't know how to do this)
Set the bandana down in front of you with the wrong side up and the CO tip pointing away from you. You will work the border from the bottom right corner, up to the CO tip, and down to the bottom left corner.
k2, sl1, pick up and knit a stitch (from the bottom right corner), psso
slide the stitches to the other end of the needle, and without turning, repeat the row.
Continue in this manner, working across the bandana from right to left, until two sides of the bandana are bordered. Knit two more rounds as a normal i-cord.
Leave the 3 stitches on the dpn.

Tie-band
This is the piece that actually ties around your head. It's a flat tube that's worked from left to right along the live stitches at the bottom of the bandana (with the wrong side up).

Band pattern:
k1, yf, sl1, yb, k1, yf, sl1, yb, k1, yf, sl1 every row

With Wine and smaller needles, CO 6 stitches
Work in band pattern for 5" or desired length of tie-end

Row 1 (WS): k1, yf, sl1, yb, k1, yf, sl1, yb, sl1, k1 from dpn, psso, yf, sl1
Row 2 and all even rows(RS): band pattern
Row 3: k1, yf, sl1, yb, k1, yf, sl1, yb, sl1, k1 from dpn, psso, yf, sl1
Row 5: k1, yf, sl1, yb, k1, yf, sl1, yb, sl1, k1 from dpn, psso, yf, sl1
Row 7: k1, yf, sl1, yb, k1, yf, sl1, yb, sl1, k1 from scrap yarn, psso, yf, sl1

Repeat rows 6 and 7 until there are no live stitches left.
Pick up 3 stitches from the i-cord cast-on, and repeat rows 3 more times
Work in band stitch for 5" or to match other tie end
BO
Weave in all ends
