Also, you are one of three, count them three, friends of mine who has so far offered to come to Fremont to see me, as opposed to "Oh, you're studying for the bar! Then you must have lots of time to travel from the South Bay to San Francisco, where I am, because I really want to see you so long as you go out of your way to come to where I am when you have limited time!"

One of the other two people also wants to come to Fremont for Naz purposes. But I think that won't happen 'til after the bar 'cuz she's off traveling this month.

So anyway what I'm saying is I could probably do an evening movie sometime, since I like having the daytimes for studying but I lose steam around 9 PM.

People who won't leave SF (or Manhattan) are lame for many reasons.

Sounds good; I'll try you again sometime. But do feel free to suggest a day. I'm pretty flexible, modulo my constraint of being in Berkeley weekdays 4-6.

You know Schwern? The rest of my social circle just collapsed in on itself.

Believe it.

See, Schwern was imfallingup's roommate until recently, and imfallingup knows almost everyone in Portland, so... I basically can't draw any line between "Bay Area people I know" and "Portland people I know" anymore.

I think the main way that social circles in Portland expand is through roommates. But yeah, I know him through the Portland-Seattle Underground Railroad which exists to send Portland people up to Seattle when they realize they can't find jobs in Portland, and then sends their friends up to visit them periodically, or vice versa.

This Onion article is made more excellent by the article itself: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/28784

OK, I have always loved that article, and the headline was EERILY PRESCIENT.

My favorite Onion headline is "Libertarian Reluctantly Calls Fire Department." That was just one of those headlines they've got, like, "see p. 3," without any follow-up story. Wise.

my favorite headline is "Philandering String Theorist Can Explain Everything".

No advice, but some speculation on why they won't deal with pets: Maybe the liability is too much? When you ship people around, they can take care of themselves; when you ship people's shit around, you can insure it. I don't know what the rules for moving people's pets from one place to another are, but my guess is "it's tricky at best". Although clearly since "buy an extra seat on the plane" is _a_ solution, they could surely pay for that.

Good luck on the exam!!! :-)

Yeah, the liability was the main reason I could think of. But we're talking about not letting them travel with me in the fucking cabin of a fucking airplane, which, indeed, they won't pay for. I could understand saying "no, we won't use one of those pet shipping services," or "no, we won't pay for them to travel in cargo," but in the cabin with me? Rrgh.

Thanks! :D

Just in case you weren't aware: there are folks that will take care of transporting pets for you. I used one myself when I moved to Portland from Houston. They book the flight, pick up and prep your pet from wherever you designate, call you when the flight has left and let you know when you can pick them up.

I arrived at the PDX cargo terminal on a cool October afternoon to find my Dukkha looking miffed but otherwise hale in her crate.

It was really very easy and at quite a reasonable price.

I know - I've looked at that option a little, but it ends up being about the same cost as having them come with me in the cabin, and we don't have to be separated.

Also I am a big softie and I don't want to let them out of my sight.

What's Dukkha like, personality-wise? One of mine is so delicate and high-strung that I'm afraid of how much she'd freak out doing air travel.

Mostly very calm. She doesn't like to be picked up and held. She mildly resists being put in the crate because of it, then she'll yowl languidly for a bit before deciding she's OK.

I once drove from here to Texas and back with her. She slept either in the crate or on the floorboard behind the passenger seat most of the time. Noises from trucks and such would freak her out for a bit.
