I need a place to live this summer. I'll be working on Page Mill Road in Palo Alto, so I would prefer to live in Palo Alto/Mountain View/Los Altos. Commuting is what drove me out of the Bay Area the last time, so I am loath to live any farther away than that, particularly with gas prices being what they are (and what they will be by summertime). Only in the Bay Area would a list include both "horse riding" and "QA".

I suggest EPA City or Menlo Park. Nice motorcycle ride from there up Page Mill Road.

ETA: I realize that's the ugly 101 side, but the area that arjache lived in was so surrounded by trees as to actually be really nice and have a bit of a canopy effect. I remember thinking it was a cheap area, but I don't remember if it was as cheap as what you're looking for.
