i'm reminded of another point i should've made earlier:
there were a couple of groups that were at hands on who came in with a clear idea of what they wanted to do, called hands on, told them "here's a project we want to do in the area, we have people who have the right skills, and we just need basic infrastructure like housing", and hands on was happy to have them. i actually did one workday with one of these groups, a bunch of (real, rather than computer) engineers from virginia who were working a house following a lead from a local pastor.
so perhaps you might want to consider joining hands on but doing SHN work for your project? the right thing to do would be to call the local HandsOn (the NOLA branch should be up and running well by now) and ask what they think. (again, i should add the disclaimer that, given that handson has changed management since i was there, they may've changed some policies)
Yeah, I e-mailed them ("them" meaning the new management) to ask about doing just that, but didn't think to phone them. I suppose I shall pick up the phone! ...at a decent hour...
I made my credit score awesome via the expediant of taking a spare $12k I had lying around after the dot-com crash, using it to get a secured loan, and then using the money from the secured loan to get another secured loan. And then I just let the money sit there and pay the loans back by themselves, and after that I had walks on water credit.

BTW, let me know if you want to hang out before I leave again. :-)

The spare $12k is the hard part, though.

But, since it has regularly gotten me better interest rates on things like cars and houses, I think it ended up being worth it.

Too bad I've got no money at all to put down house. Or even a used car, for that matter.
