Sex in the City

One thing I just don't get is why anyone is even remotely excited / intrigued / even considering going to see this movie. Yes, I am a man, which means I *totally* don't get the show. Isn't is supposed to be a show about how being an empowered woman just means that you can sleep with whomever you want and buy ridiculously expensive shoes ( Read more... )

I'm not convinced you shouldn't be called a "gay gay man"

Another woman here who hated SATC and thinks the movie is even stupider just by its nature. It is also 2.5 hours long. 2.5 HOURS.

It did, however, spawn the best. AICN review. Ever.

Dude, I loved the show. Loved the characters, even if they slept with everyone (and then some). A little break from reality & some entertainment was all I was looking for. I already have my tickets and a babsitter lined up to see the show this weekend. I CAN'T WAIT!

Dude.
Sigh.
Okay, Tony and I have had this discussion. If Entourage (the male equivalent) had a movie coming out he and i would have the reverse thoughts.

The movie is about being independent and empowered, yes, but that doesn't mean you can have sex with anyone. It means you can look for love and find it. The show is about finding love, it's about self growth and discovery, and about friendships and relationships. Yes, there are glamorous, funny aspects, but it is a well-rounded, addictive show. I hated it before I watched it in excess one weekend. Then i couldn't stop. I was so involved in these fictitious characters. It's very easy to relate to for many women. The writing is very smart.

See, this is what I never got. I can understand the whole "stupid fantasy" aspect of it as attractive. Ridiculous clothes, wonky economics, caricatured personalities, completely implausible relationships, no thinking required. I'm told by many people that the show is "smart" and "witty" but I always found the plots contrived, the writing clunky, and the jokes painful. And I really did try -- I have watched most of the episodes.
