I'm overwhelmed and incredibly saddened.

Tsunami!

I remember when I was a kid and we would go to the beach every summer in North Carolina. My sisters and I would build sand castles close to the water line as the tide was coming in and then watch with glee the destruction of biblical proportion take place on our creations. Sometimes we'd sit in the tide pool and try to stay there as long as possible before being overwhelmed by the incoming stronger and higher waves. We'd giggle and laugh and run away yealling "Tidal wave! Run for your lives!"

Kid stuff.

But Mother Nature isn't accurately named. No mother would do what "she" does to her children over and over again.

Yesterday the death toll was around 3,000. The New York Times is reporting now that it's over 22,000. That's more than seven September 11th's, and the death toll is expected to rise as people get sick and die from malnutrition or disease carried by polluted drinking water and a lack of basic sanitation.

It breaks my heart to see mothers being carried out of mass graves, wailing and crying for the children they leave in the pit. As Americans, we can help. We have resources in the form of money and expertise that we can provide meaningful relief to people affected by this tragedy. I strongly encourage you to make a donation to the Red Cross or Catholic Relief Services, or to any other international aid organization.

They need us now. $10.00. $25.00. $100.00. Anything you can give will help. Especially now, buttressed against the comfortable and well apportioned Christmas celebrations we've all just experienced, it's unconscionable not to respond in a meaningful way to people who clearly need our help. And I'm not just talking to Mel Gibson, although the money he made on a movie about Jesus would be a great help at a time like now.
