bye dad. we won’t be apart for too long this time. i promise.

For Sokka, Hakoda is someone who plays a consistent role in the boys life. From beginning to end of the series his father plays an important role in his actions. Even in the two part episode at the beginning of the series when Katara demands why he didn't trust Aang he responded with: I'm trying to protect you, like dad wanted me to. Sokka spends the entire series chasing after his father and trying to be reunited with him. Every time he finally does his father is, once more, ripped away from him. And with each time, in a way, we see the boy grow.

Sokka strives to be like his father. To him his father is this guy on a pedestal he wants to make proud and be just like. This is highly pointed out in Season 3: Episode 10-11 Day of the Black Sun. We really see Sokka and Katara's relationship grow throughout the entire series. One thing never changed though and that was the constant need to protect one another. Sokka spends most of his time trying to keep an eye on his sister and friends. In the beginning he attempted to steer them away from as much trouble as possible (as seen in Season 1, Episode 10: Jet).

Sokka may not always get along with his sister and may not always be nice to her, but that doesn't change a thing about his reactions to her. "Dad told me to protect you," plays a very significant role in his reactions to her--especially in season one where Katara's bending was so much weaker than what it became. Like with Hakoda this bond is shown in the very first episode where, although they were bickering just seconds before, when the ( ... )
