In the Dark of the Night (Evil Will Find Them), with cupcakemoderne

Chloe was supposed to meet up with Lois for dinner on your average Thursday night (well, as average as it gets in Metropolis), but Lois called to say she had to work late. Normally, Chloe would have things to do at the Watchtower, but there were no missions tonight and, let's be honest, she was antsy. So, she texted Lois to tell her cousin that she ( Read more... )

Lois is rifling through her bag, trying to find the piece of paper with the ominous scrawling on it. "Hey Chloe, boy are you a sight for sore/coffee deprived eyes. I came into work this morning to find my desk completely in shambles, and I know what you're thinking but this /mess/ isn't entirely mine". She takes a deep breath as she pulls the scrappy index card from a side pocket in her purse. "What in God's name do you make of this"....

The first thing Chloe notices is how flustered her cousin seems. The second is the shambled mess that is supposed to be Lois' desk. That can't be good. And yet...as Chloe takes the index card from the other woman, her adrenaline kicks in and she's excited. Good, no. Interesting, absolutely. "I think someone's cage is very rattled right now, which means you're on the right track. Do you have any idea who would want to scare you into silence?"

Lois is amused by how excited her little blonde cousin always gets when there's sleuthing to be done. "No, I mean I just don't have a clue and I've called all my sources from Perry White to that girl at the cupcake shop down the street. You know that one who calls herself the 'Princess of Gossip', yeah well she was no help but I did score us these". She points down to a black box wrapped in a pink ribbon. "I got your favorite; chocolate with lavender buttercream. "So, what do you think 'Veronica Mars', where do we go from here?

Almost absently - her mind is already working overtime, trying to plan a course of action - Chloe looks down at the box and pulls the ribbon off. "Have I told you lately that I love you? A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down and these sugary delights are really going to come in handy during the all-nighter I'm pretty sure we're about to pull." Opening the box, she takes out a cupcake, then plops down in Clark's chair and looks over at Lois.

"First thing's first: have you had any incidences like this happen recently? If we can figure out when it started, that lessons the steps backward we're going to have to trace."

I think the last time you told me was yesterday via text, so it only partially counts. She gives Chloe a playful wink before taking a sip of her long-past-the-expiration-time coffee. "Yuck". She ponders for a minute. She's not sure if it's the coffee leaving a bad taste in her mouth or the note. She's used to death threats and insidious emails but there's something about this awful little piece of paper, something ominous. "Nothing that I can think of but let's go back through my recent emails." She brings up her inbox for them to peruse. If we're doing the whole 24-Hour-Detective thing tonight, we're definitely going to need more coffee. It's moments like these when she instinctively thinks of Jimmy but not just because he always kept her and Chloe well supplied in caffeine but because she missed him. She knows how painful the memories are for her cousin so she rarely, if ever, brings him up. "Should we head out and grab something to drink before we get started?"

Chloe glances at the names of recent senders in Lois' inbox then back at her cousin. She knows from experience that the investigative journalism career inevitably means threats of death and other very unpleasant things, but she is still worried about Lois. The truth is, though the index card doesn't say much, it gives her the heeby-jeebies. Shivering, although it isn't all that cold in the room, she nods. "I think that my be a good idea. Sugar alone might not be enough to power us through this" An image of Jimmy flashes through her mind because there was a time when he would have gone for the coffee so her and Lois could keep puzzling out the mystery at-hand. Mentally flinching, she shoves that idea as far back in her mind as she can. "If we hurry, we can make it to that place on the corner before they close." She stands up, grabbing her purse and reaching to give her cousin's hand a squeeze. "We'll figure out who's behind this, Lois."

As usual Lois had underplayed the seriousness of the situation when she texted and asked her cousin to come do the 'Sherlock' thing but she knew that as long as Chloe was there, things would be alright. Hell they had made it this far, more often than not together and no matter how dire the situation seemed somehow their intuition, resourcefulness and sheer fortitude had always gotten them through - they were quite the team! They had even managed to escape the wrath of Lex Luthor, a man whose acuity and malevolence were certainly nothing to be trifled with. Lois' brain is spinning a mile a minute when her cousin's hand squeeze quickly brings her back to reality. "Sure, the corner works." The rain is pelting against the wondow. "We picked quite the night to be out gallivanting, didn't we?"

"It's always the dark and stormy nights, isn't it?" Smiling at Lois, she heads for the elevator and swipes one of the spare umbrellas that are kept there. If nothing else, it'll serve as a barrier between them and any prying eyes. Her cousin's mystery malefactor could be watching. Actually, scratch that. He or she most likely has his/her eyes on Lois, which means keeping to the shadows is probably their best bet. Looking down at herself and the blazing white jacket she's wearing, she sighs. No help for that now. When Lo gets in the elevator, Chloe pushes the button for the ground floor and laughs when she hears what is playing. "Bad Moon Rising. The Universe has a sense of humor tonight."
