Warcraftsues, year two

Sep 16, 2008 02:57

Well, its been two years (more or less) since the first Warcraftsues post. And, as I won't be around for the actual rollover, I've decided it's time for an arbitrary year in review, complete with analysis of trends, random commentary, idle speculation and lots of typos.

Actually, more typos then anything else )

wikicrap, random, rak, comic, controversial statement

I haven't gotten a chance to read the Dark Portal novel as yet. Given that it's co-written by Christine Golden, I am hopeful.

I can confirm that it was pretty damn good. Not as good as LOTC or ROTH, but still a better read than any of Knaak's stuff. Then again, I find The Enquirer to be a more impressive read than that, sooooo...

I predict a bunch of deathknights who keep their braces on at all tiems to hide the scars!

Heeeey. Ow.

I had a human for a while who did that, but he had mangled genitals, distrusted women, wasn't really a looker, had zero noble lineage, and suffered from mild-to-moderate PTSD which lead to some serious emotional coping issues.

But still.

Ow. Just because you don't wanna look like you tried to chew off your hands doesn't mean you're a Sue (I hope)!

Having delt with my own mental illness demons, seeing what is basically a bad parody played as an attention seeking gambit shits me mightily.
So to be specific, this is exactly what i predict for deathknights: A bunch of "look at my delicious suffering, comfort me" types. If this description applies to your personal motivations in creating a character no matter how well researched, then yup, Stu.

Well yeah, no, that noise I avoid like a plague. I mean if you're going to have a backstory your character doesn't talk about for emotional reasons, why the fuck would your character talk about it at every odd opportunity?

Hmm, why DO Wikis die out, let me think...could it have anything to do wiiiiith...

Days past when you could basically throw yourself at a Server's wiki and come up with a bukkit load of good material without even trying.

Could it be because places like this gleefully rake through the content looking for anything to mock? That they are a frequent target of forum trolls? That people actually go to the Wiki sites after hearing about RPers on places like this and vandalize the pages? And people got tired of painting big red targets on themselves? And the content that was once kept on visible, heavily advertised Wiki sites has been decentralized and moved to private forums, journals and discussion groups that information about is passed by word of mouth instead of shot up into the sky in big glittering flashy letters?

Nah, that can't be it.

That being said, I'm fully expecting Death Knight RP to resurrect (Ha! Bad pun!) one old, bad human trend - the dispossessed Lordaron Nobleman with tears in his eyes.

The whole "yeah, we're good guys" aspect of Death Knights leads me to the same conclusion.

Also, seeing as how the Death Knights have blue eyes, I'm also going to make a prediction that we're going to see a massive increase in the number of Death Knights that're rolled as High Elves. More than the Belves do now. I see dark days ahead for Silvermoon if this occurs. Pale skin, blue eyes, corpselike features? Nuevo-goth or simply flat-out emo elves are going to result.

Bad all around.

EDIT: Because I'm always so perfectly clear.

The problem with that is the Death Knight blue is not nearly the same thing as the High Elf blue. And every Death Knight has the same colour eyes. Not that I'm saying it would stop people (like the green eyes hasn't now).

One thing I predict to keep the DK Sue flood in check at least somewhat is the hard limit of one per server per account. That forces Sue players to chose exactly what to do with their one chance... and from my own experience I know that many Sue players are notoriously indecisive.
Sycosina Syndrome will explode in its rate of occurrence.
