Where is your line?

So a recent post got me thinking about this.

I have a line when it comes to Sueishness, in that I can tolerate just about any outlandish or special snowflake character if certain conditions are met. For me, those conditions are as follows:
  • The character isn't a ploy for attention. I think you can usually tell when someone's playing a character just ( Read more... )

I have actually been thinking about the same thing for quite a while now, so I'll happily jump in! Warning: Post may contain lots of tangents, as usual ;)

I absolutely agree with your first point, Not a ploy for attention. I find it easier to accept unusual characters if they're not purely defined by their unusualness, which may even be hidden or just one trait among others, and if they don't start shoving their back story in my face the second I say hello. (Note: I may have RP'd with a "secret dragon" for half a year now. I still have no idea IC and only a sneaking suspicion OOC, after his RP partner mentioned something along the lines of "he will never appear to be anything else than a blood elf". Time will tell?).

Being played well is another plus in my book, although the concept should at least make some sense in the world's rules/background/physical laws... (The pen&paper RPG I play calls it "fantastic realism"). So, if it hasn't been mentioned anywhere, but might be possible, that's okay in my book. If there are facts that ( ... )

I definitely agree with the ideas put forth so far. To expand on "not a ploy for attention," I'd also put "romance" and "ERP" under those categories ( ... )

My own opinion, when I see people using 'Kaldorei', 'Sin'dorei', and especially 'Shu'halo' (which I see often) is that it's less a bid for specialness and more a leaning to the character's racial pride. Situations and people are different of course.

I can accept sin'dorei in speech too, even if it's odd speaking Thalassian while you're marked as speaking Thalassian, but putting it as your race in MyRP which is more of an OOC medium than an IC one. It just makes me inexplicably irritated.

For Mary Sues with especially grand backgrounds and/or powers, I don't mind whatever they're up to, given two rules:

1. Keep it under wraps to the general roleplaying population, and only let those traits out with groups or friends you know that are okay with it.
2. Don't expect others to play along with it.

Unfortunately, most people that want grand powers and the like flaunt them at every opportunity, and then godmode or get pissy when people call them on it. For some people, playing a highly unusual and/or powerful character can be great fun, but the average person trying their hand at it doesn't do a good job.*

Hmm... I suppose what I said could apply to ERP as well.

* For example, I know of one person that likes to roleplay dragon romances. Not just any romances, but ones starring her original dragon characters with Aspects and even Atramedes! I wouldn't have minded if it was kept private, but she decided to proudly share it and now the cat's out of the bag. Ew.

You know well and good where my line ends, bb.

Pretty much the only problem I have is when players give their characters a mental illness that they know absolutely nothing about other than the fact that it's a "srs mentul illnus." It makes me want to punch a wall.

I've seen four different people write in their mrps that their characters have schizophrenia and A) Say that it's gotten better, or B) cite a completely wrong illness like multiple personality disorder. And that is mostly a ploy for attention. HAHA, IT'S FUNNY LOOK AT ME I'M CRAZY LOLOL.

Excuse me if I get a little passionate about this. This kind of crap makes me pretty angry.

I once thought of giving one of my characters schizophrenia, he would sometimes try to hurt himself, sometimes get into arguements with himself and hear voices. But I cut off his thumb instead.

I don't...really have a problem with a character who's mentally ill if it's played correctly. Do an adequate amount of research. Show me through rp. Communicate about it with me OOCly. Be sensitive. That's all I ask if someone wants to play it out.
