Nature versus Mature

Jan 25, 2006 11:02

My work life has been consumed by people taking it upon themselves to force me to live up to my potential, whatever that might be. It seems a little at odds with the constant complaints I receive regarding my lack of approachability and general intimidation factor. How intimidating can I be if, no matter where I go or what I do, someone sees past ( Read more... )

Damn people, always expecting your best and wanting you to self-actualize.

I guess my point is that, if I were to self-actualize, I would likely self-actualize myself out of this place entirely and do something completely different than what they expect me to.

So, it is to their advantage that I never live up to my potential - otherwise, I wouldn't deign to work for them.

But I figure telling them that won't go over well though.

It would certainly limit your prospects.

In many ways, I have the ideal setup: A good job with great pay that requires a high degree of technical knowledge, but very little actual work. I keep telling myself that I want to drop it all and move to DC, but I doubt I'd find a gig this slack up there.

I vacillate between viewing the slack I have as advantageous versus debilitating. Somehow, the extra free time doesn't automatically lead to productive use of said free time. I only feel all the more guilty when I spend an entire day not only not doing any work, but not really doing anything at all.

Then there's the issue of my rising workload and the four months last year where I basically didn't even have time to think of anything outside of work.

Which makes me wonder if this job isn't evolving into... you know... well...

work.

much of my employment frustration stems from the fact that all three of my bosses constantly ask me why i'm wasting my time here when i have such a great skillset for design/production and it/software support.

i always stare at them blankly wondering just how they want me to answer that question.

one even went so far as to say that, were he my father, he'd make sure i was back in school finishing my degree.

...

then he asks me to do excel data entry.

"But, I love women's undergarments."
