Nostalgia

Suddenly strangely nostalgic for the days when I read "Chicka Chicka ABC" and "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See" to my son so often that I had them memorized--and could impress the hell out of him by "reading" them to him, word for word, without looking at the pages at all.

Sometimes I would zone out while reading a book, and come back to the moment a minute or two later realizing I'd read several pages without retaining any memory of it.

Oh, I did that all the time. I also sang bedtime songs to him all the time, mostly the same half-dozen or so supplemented by a few more depending on how many he needed and how many I felt like singing. But that half-dozen or so I could sing without thinking about at all. I still sing them once in a while--for my own sake; he's long past needing them.
