Kramnik vs Robot

Rebroadcast from chessbase. I think the title is something like Chess Visitor Robot, but I'm open to correction.

I love how he tries to get in its head playing pawn to a6.5, covering the b5 square while retaining control of the b6 square. That would be useful in many Sicilian lines.

chess, rebroadcast

I love how it's an actual huge asskicking robot named Robot. that is the greatest fucking thing I've ever seen! thus inspired, now I'm going to have to lobby for the next version of Quackle to be a huge evil robotic duck that can shoot red laser beams out of its eyes.

i had this exact idea for a scrabble game. we (my company) even have a robot that looks very similar to this one, but unfortunately it's in virginia right now. i built a vision system for it with a webcam for a project, and i always wanted to adapt it to recognize scrabble tiles and the board, but i didn't have the time. i'm working on that stuff on my own time now with a webcam, but it would be awesome if i could get a cheap robot to actually play the tiles!

I know exactly zero about computer vision, but I want to add chess/Scrabble to Google Goggles. Google plans to open up the Goggles platform relatively soon, so maybe we can work together on it. I hadn't thought much about robotics: my dream is just a cool augmented reality thing.

oh, interesting! i'd be totally down for working on it. i think coming up with OCR for the individual tiles won't be that hard; i'd find it harder to actually localize the tile squares within the board and detecting the board itself. but for stuff like that, you can put a simple pattern on the corners of the board, i think. (i came up with a bunch of QR-code-like patterns, but much simpler/smaller, for my project work)

actually, i was thinking of using the camera on the android phones. it has much better resolution than most webcams; i just need to figure out a way to pull data from it thru USB (or even wifi!). and then create a nice android mount on top of the board...

Heh, I know those chess tables from my old 'hood in Manhattan. Didn't know they weren't adult friendly anymore. Seems now you gotta bring your 11-year-old kid with you just to be able to play on them!

Sort of an ironic twist on the "minors must be accompanied by an adult" laws. I guess the NYPD is trying to protect us from the Robert Snyder's of the world.
