I have gotten a job as a receptionist at a busy doctor office. I was with Goodwill and because of my physical disability, they helped me find the job. I have very mixed feelings on the job

I hate to say this, but you don't sound happy to be there at all. And I don't blame you! You keep saying the others are nice, but they don't talk to you. I don't see anything nice at all about them. Nor are they making any effort to train you. WTF's up with that? You also said they might think you're snobby because you are shy. It pisses me off beyond anything when people think that someone who's shy is a snob. However, you've already said you try talking to them. You have to repeat things 3 times before they respond. How on earth is that being a snob? If anyone's a snob, they are.
Sorry to be so negative, but all this just sent up all kinds of warning bells.
I've spent the last four days either answering phones and making appointments/cancelling appointments or sitting behind people and watching them work. They've told me they are too busy, which makes me wonder why they didn't wait and have me start after New Years.
It's okay. I have to keep this job, I'll just hope it gets better.
But the reason I ask if they want me to do things (and I always ask with a :"Do you want me to" or "Can I" or "Is there something.") is because they are running very behind and each has about five things to do at once. For example, the patient comes in and signs in. C is also doing faxes at this time and answering phones (as am I and I, well the phones. Only her computer can do faxes.) It takes all of a minute to assess someone, but C can take up to five minutes to get to them. So the nurses don't even know they are there. After the visit, the patient has to come back out to the waiting room and wait up to an hour to be discharged. They are slow! So I honestly thought/think that doing an easy task like signing people in, would give C and the other girl more time to get their other work done in the first hour of opening, so they could discharge faster. (Because patients are complaining about the long wait

Sometimes close-knit workplaces can be slow to open up to new people, especially if someone was let go (or will be let go). Don't press it! Read on your lunch break if need be

As far as I know, I'm semi-replacing a woman that left to be a full time mom. After the girl (the one whose out until next month comes back) I actually have no idea where I'll go, as there is no chair or desk for me. (which makes me thing In is going to the back and I'm taking her place) Like I said before, I'm very confused about my actual job, and the bosses seem just as confused.
For my own training, I've taken to sitting behind the two women and watching them as I take notes. I've figured several things out on my own. I've figured out how several smaller things are done on their computers. I'm also answering the phones for them, and have been told its a help. The only issue is that the only free phone and computer are several feet from the two girls. So, I have to make the choice between helping with phones or watching them. Because they just answer right away, and I can't keep getting up. I've also taken to faxing and making copies, as that's something I can do. I've also taken to tidying up the area.
I'm thinking maybe you should just sign the people in without asking. If you know how to do it all properly. You might piss off the people who've been there longer, but so what? And you'll impress those who matter by having taken some initiative. Not to mention you'll have happier patients.
I would, but she sits at the desk that is in front of the window where they sign it. I would just feel too rude and it could lead to some awkward moments if I lean over her to grab a clipboard.
I've tried talking about things I've heard them talk about, like their pets or just the holiday season. From what I've heard, I'm not sure what movies, tv, or books to talk about. They seem really into country music, Twilight, and 50 Shades of Grey - things I loathe. I've tried to find other things, small things we might have in common. I know they like cat videos on youtube. I think we are very different in terms of culture.
That is hilarious. You could always amuse yourself by creating a persona that likes those things. That might only be good when you're sure you're going to get to leave there soon.
