I finally watched it and I noticed so many tantalising little details, I had to write them up, to end up writing a review of sorts.
I hereby present, in chronological order: "20 points of interest about 'Partners in Crime'"
1. DIDDLY DUM
The opening theme tune's different from the one in Voyage of the Damned. I noticed the drums were smoothened, they added some brass instruments, removed the tinkly piano bit near and added a funny sort of whistle at the very end.
2. LIKE BROTHER AND SISTER
I loved the the paralels between the Doctor's and Donna's actions (and clothes!) whilst investigating Adipose both now and later on, during the night sequence.
3. I'M EASILY AMUSED
On the close-ups of Ms. Foster, you see the word "DUST" on the screen behind her. Of course, it's just part of "INDUSTRIES", but nice coincidence. Anyone else noticed "BOO" in "The Runaway Bride"?
4 .CHEEKY
Murray Gold's music right through to the meerkat sequence :D Donna's Theme makes me grin.
5. OLD HABITS DIE HARD
Reminds me of the Ninth Doctor looking through the cat flap.
6. OUCHIES
I hope Donna never finds out that she sort of caused Stacy's death. Also, I can't accept the giveaway pendant that activates other people's Adipose for no reason. Am I missing some explanation?
7. NOT FOOD, STRING AND STAPLES: THAT'S JUST SHOWING OFF.
The Doctor's gizmo: pieced together with rubber bands, a paper clip and the tops of plastic bottles.
8. MAI GIKINESS, IT REECHES TEH STRATOSPHEER
The commentary said to look closely at the taxi cab sequence for clues by the art department. I see stickers on the windshields (front and back) with the logo for ATMOS with a triangle logo. Same sticker is on the taxi that runs over some Adipose later on.
9. SAY NO MORE
Ah, nagging mothers. Heh.
10. A PALE BLUE DOT?
Yay shots of Donna looking through a telescope! Also, blue telescope and blue scarf whilst they're discussing the Blue Box. And then it turns out she drives a blue car...
11. HOUSE OF THE (TIME)LORD
Donna's mother thinks her being in a church is risible. Well, just remember what happened the last time we saw her in one! The bathroom sequence was fantastic.
12. TWO WORLDS COLLIDE
Glorious. Well done RTD for dreaming that one up. Here's a transcript of their mimed conversation from the Confidential (the working title of the episode was 'Yellow'. Huh?) Parts in brackets were in the script but not in the episode:
The Doctor: Donna???
Donna: Doctor!!!!
T D: but...what? Wha... WHAT??!?
D: Oh! My! God!
T D: but... how???
D: It's me!
T D: [well] yeah, I can see that!
Donna: oh this is brilliant!
The Doctor: but... what the [hell] heck are you doing threre???
[Donna just waves, big smile.
T D: but, but, but, why, what, where, when?]
D: [you!!] I was looking for you!
T D: me? What for?
D: [I, came here, trouble,] read about it, internet, [I thought, trouble = you!] And this place is weird! [Pills! So I hid. Back there.] Crept along. Heard this lot. Looked. You! Cos they...
13. SEEING SIGNS EVERYWHERE
Long shot, but the bullets left a triangle on the door. See point 8.
14. BRAINS, NOT BRAWN.
I love that he can't physically pull Donna up. I liked the Doctor knocking the sonic pen out of Ms. Foster's hand and the "Nor me, let's find out", but there was way too much sonic action in this episode.
15. BLINK AND YOU'LL MISS IT
The Adiposean planet was lost? It mystifies the Doctor and is left unexplained. I smell a thread leading to the finale. Oh gods, does that mean we'll get to see grown-up Adipose as well? I'd say that space ship was way too beautiful not to be used again, but this show makes a habit of that sort of thing.
16. SHADOWY CHARACTERS
We find out for the first time that the Shadow Proclamation is an organisation, rather than the name of a galactic treaty. Now there's a plot point that connects to Rose. I'm seeing so many possible hidden clues in this episode!
17. YEP, SHE'LL DO
Very nice scene with the Doctor panicking, Donna forcing him to explain and then providing the other pendant. Although she did kill someone with it. Big pay-off for all their separate, yet similar, scenes in the beginning. However, I won't be happy until someone explains the question I raised on point 6. Love Ms. Foster's supreme calm even when she loses. Things would have probably turned out better for her if she did worry a bit every now and then.
18. AT LEAST HE KEPT HIS TIE ON THIS TIME
What's with the Doctor luring his companions up dark alleys? No wonder all the talk of mating had her worried. Seriously, though, I like how this scene is evocative of Martha's, since they discuss her. It's good, but sad, that the Doctor feels so guilty. And him bringing her bags in was a lovely touch. Top form, RTD!
18. AM I JUST PARANOID AT THIS POINT?
Donna dropped the car keys into the same bin as the Doctor dropped the sonic pen. And Sylvia will be looking through it in a bit. Another possible thing to be picked up (heh)?
19. DOCTOR WHO HAS BROKEN MY BRAIN
That was surprising. Well done keeping that one secret, Doctor Who! She looked closed to tears, though. And how did she just disappear? WHAT'S GOING ON?!?
20. GRAMPS
How adorable is grampa Wilf? As to his completely missing the space ship earlier on, we now know where Donna gets that from! I love the glee he displays here and how happy Donna and the Doctor look. And we see the TARDIS zooming physically into space, like we did in "The Runaway Bride".
