[ACTION - A (Outside Mayfield Dairy, OPEN TO ALL)]

[On his first day in Mayfield, Caesar had asked Balin if he had any explosives or powers strong enough to destroy an armored building, referring to the attack made on the Dairy back in March. So today, while Mayfield is temporarily without a police chief, Balin is outside the Mayfield Dairy.]

[Susan has been here long enough to know who belongs in the school and who doesn't, somewhat courtesy of her unique talents. Now, in the middle of summer vacation? No one does, really. Not even her. But the high school English teacher had needed to retrieve a few books for some students who hadn't been able to get ahold of the summer reading.]

School is out of session for the summer. If you've been assigned to be an instructor next year, come back in September.

Do try to understand. You're not the hero of this story, and the rest of us aren't helpless civilians waiting for a savior to come along. Everyone seems to think they're different, for some reason that I imagine has something to do with fantastically large egos. I'll admit I thought the same thing myself.

The cage has been rattled enough times, and we've learned the bars are electrified, barbed, layered with broken glass, and connected to cannons that shoot fire-breathing flying sharks at us. Is that clear enough?

The home defense isn't a poor idea, though. Against some things, anyway.

[After Susan elaborates on just how secure the cage is ... he blinks a few times incredulously.]

Wait, you think I'm tryin'a be'a hero of a story?

[A beat ... then he busts laughing.]

This ain't about tryin'a be a hero, miss. I'm jus'a soldier who's tryin'a take some kinda initiative. That's all. Grady's'a one that handled most'a the dronin' duties, yeah? Now he's dead an' they're tryin'a find someone to replace him.

I'm seein' a possible tactical vulnerability an' I'm gonna try exploitin' it. An' trust me, I know all about hopeless odds. Where I'm from, there ain't enough humans left'a fill New York City. We've got a galactic superpower breathin' down our necks.

[He grins lopsidedly.]

Hope ain't a strategy, anyway.

[Susan does not look amused.]

That you consider the posters a vulnerability is enough of a mistake for me to assure you - you'll feel the cage for yourself soon enough.

Something will happen soon. Try to be ready for it.

Oh, I will. It's why I'm here, after all.

Good luck, then. Try not to lose any fingers.

[Susan will pause before turning to leave.]

If you need anything else, my name is Susan Sto Helit.

Heh. Ahright.

[Balin gives a nod and a bit of a grin. And in response to Susan giving her name ...]

I'm Balin Wilbur, Sergeant First Class. Thanks again, Miss Helit.

Miss Sto Helit, please. Goodbye, then, Sgt. Wilbur.

[With a flutter of black cloak, she departs.]
