02 (redux): Work? Really?

Jun 06, 2010 17:43

[filtered to all non-drones]I called my 'boss' and took a couple days off from work. Shouldn't, really, since there's not a hell of a lot else to do in this town, but I just can't bring myself to do it. What's the point of being a lawyer in a town without any crime? The real injustice is the life we're forced to lead here, and I can't prosecute ( Read more... )

I wouldn't be opposed to a café. M'not sure how you'd go about doing it, though.

Most places, there's all sorts of paperwork to fill out, channels to follow to start a new business. Permits and the like. I'm not entirely sure this city allows for anything 'new,' though. There's probably a code against it in the town charter or something.

I'm sure you could set something up in a garage of some sort 'n not say it was a business. If they ask you could pass it off as a lemonade stand for adults.

There's an idea. Of course, that's assuming I can even get my hands on a decent brew around here.

I think Colombian dark roast wouldn't be considered "American" enough around here.

So crappy coffee is the American standard? Thought the general US philosophy was 'do everything better than everyone else.'

I think it's more of "gather the best parts of the other parts of the world and make them our own," but Mayfield doesn't even get that far.

You make a good point. Both of them. But even barring Colombian coffee. There's at least a couple good American-owned coffee producers. There's got to be something besides this sorry excuse for a beverage.

Ah, a fellow prosecutor, ja?

I'd say it's almost criminal how they come up with all this paperwork for us to do.

I could deal with the paperwork, if any of it was for a reason. There's no justice here. No crime except what they create. So why the farce? Why should I play a puppet for a broken system? Better to do something useful. Anything.

It would indeed be better if we could spend all our time investigating this place, but they know how not to give us too much free time to do that, even if I'd rather to anything else than paperwork all day long. And then when we actually manage to find something that could lead us to the perpetrator, they know how to deter anything serious from happening.

... But it still doesn't make us give up, of course.

[He starts to say something angrily--how dare this guy imply he's giving up??--but stops mid-breath. There's a long pause, then quieter.]

Is it really giving up? If there isn't justice? This isn't giving up before it's all over, this is refusing to play their game by their rules.

Age is subjective, when it comes to coffee. Not every palate can properly appreciate its merits.

Money isn't the main issue. Getting decent beans in this town is. I hear from another gent that sometimes Mayfield gives back to its citizens, if you catch my drift. I'm trying to see if I can get my hands on some higher quality brew, if that's the case.
