maybe the chairs here at the library are the wrong size with the table. maybe i'm simply tired. i wasn't all that jazzed about the "brown bag discussion about using sex ed against rape culture" when I first got there, but I apparently made some useful points. One of which, actually, is something I need to write more about at some point other than ( Read more... )

[Writing as I think. Do not consider this polished]

Couple different things there.

I think to me, and to most people, when they hear SoAndSo is A Rapist, they think it means SoAndSo deliberately violates consent, that SoAndSo will/has go forward with whatever while knowing that it is not what the other person actually wants.

In fact, there are a small portion of (mostly men) who do that, repeatedly and knowingly. Some portion of those men do not think of themselves as Rapists, but when they answer the questionairre in the studies they do know damned well that they are doing.

There are also a whole lot of folks, probably most of us at one time or another, who have violated consent without knowing damned well at the timeI think linguistic recognition of a difference between those would be a Good Thing ( ... )

It's so hard to talk about consent violations with people, because they mix stranger/serial rape up with miscommunication.
