Signalboost: Remember how I went up to Bostonish back at Thanksgiving for-to join my friend Mary for a vegan/gluten-free/soy&peanut-free Tday feast? I don't remember how much I wrote about it, but beyond not having seen Mary for several years and hence being wonderful just on that count, the food was Gorgeous. dglenn's thoughts pretty nicely sum up my own. I spent the entire Republican rebuttal going "dude, that is not TRUE" and "did you even LISTEN to what Obama just said?"

I didn't watch Bachmann, 'cause frankly she's just trying to garner attention with her extremism. Maddow was pretty emphatic about how stupid Bachmann even having a televised response was, since she is not a chosen Republican spokesperson, and I agreed.

why is it so hard to understand that cutting government jobs still creates unemployment?

It's because people tend not to believe that government jobs are actual, necessary work. So it's not so much that they don't understand that it's unemployment, they think it's acceptable unemployment and that government employees don't really matter.

Also, historically, the number of government employee layoffs have been very small compared to the number of private employee layoffs.
(I still need to find numbers for recent years, but I've seen the ratio being one-tenth)
Also, layoffs are spread across states and municipalities compared to what we read in the headlines about a singly company eliminating 100,000 jobs or 10% of the workforce.

See, I live in DC. Cutting $ to government jobs and government in general will have a HUGE impact in this area.
