Signalboost: Remember how I went up to Bostonish back at Thanksgiving for-to join my friend Mary for a vegan/gluten-free/soy&peanut-free Tday feast? I don't remember how much I wrote about it, but beyond not having seen Mary for several years and hence being wonderful just on that count, the food was Gorgeous. And some of it I'd never have believed was vegan had I not seen her making it.
This isn't surprising, as Mary is a Culinary Institute trained professional chef, who also does a bunch of GF baking.
Folk living up Bostonward, I envy you: Mary is going to start selling some of her creations (
Here's her blogpost, including a list of some of what she'll be offering). She's got some raw stuff, some mostly-raw stuff, baked goods, and cooked things. When I was up there in November I fell in love with the sprouted sunflower seed hummus, and had trouble believing the savory cashew-cream was made of nuts.
Folk not living up Bostonward, Mary's very intermittently updated
blog has some neat recipes and suchlike.
In other news, I should handle stuff I need to handle on my big screens as OMB has told people to go home early. But I have work to do so I'll be going home early and taking notes on meetings.
Speaking of OMB, hooboy, full reorg of government?
Also speaking of OMB, why is it so hard to understand that cutting government jobs still creates unemployment?
Also speaking of the SOTU, I really did find this bit masterful, and watching on TV for a change meant I finally understand what they mean re Boehner crying:Turning first to Vice President Joe Biden and then House Speaker John Boehner, Obama said:
“That dream is why I can stand here before you tonight. That dream is why a working-class kid from Scranton can sit behind me. (Laughter and applause.) That dream is why someone who began by sweeping the floors of his father’s Cincinnati bar can preside as Speaker of the House in the greatest nation on Earth. (Applause.)”
And also also speaking of SOTU,
dglenn had an interesting commentary on the response. Haven't yet seen Bachman's thing - we weren't on CNN so we missed it last night. NPR mentioned she was looking at the wrong camera.
