Hakoda visits his only daughter on her nineteenth birthday and it's then that Aang asks for his blessing. Hakoda gives it immediately but simply waves the young man off when he mentions a bride price. Hakoda has known this day was coming longer perhaps than Katara herself, and he's refused often greater offers from the sons of noble families with that knowledge in mind.
He marries them himself that same day and never says a word when he returns just five months later with a healer to help deliver his first grandchild.
