author's notes; um, this show is haunting me. written in about forty-five minutes very late at night, and un-betaed, so all mistakes are mine. glee is not mine, nor are finn and rachel and their adorableness. and i haven't taken chemistry in a year, so forgive the mistakes there.

It doesn't take Rachel very long to figure out that Finn is not, like, the smartest person ever.

Well, that's not true, she thinks, sitting against the wall, next to Kurt at rehearsal as Mr. Schu works with Finn on his vocals. Tina and Artie are playing cards in the corner, Mercedes is in the bathroom, and Kurt is flipping through a copy of Vogue. Rachel is scrolling through her iPod, looking for a song to sing for her MySpace tonight, and occasionally glances over Kurt's shoulder, commenting on a look that she likes or doesn't like or thinks would look good on her. She is always met with a raised eyebrow or an eye roll.

Once she settles on Stars and the Moon from Songs for a New World, Rachel doesn't really have much to do but stare at Finn (that seems to be happening a lot lately.) Mr. Schu is trying to cajole him into singing Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, just for practice, but Rachel thinks he's fighting a losing battle. Like anyone even likes Elton John anymore.

Rachel has Honors Chemistry with Finn, and when she's not swimming in stoichiometry or trying to remember the lyrics to a Spring Awakening song in her head, she sometimes just looks at him. And sometimes, when she's not looking, she can totally feel his eyes on the back of her head.

(She hopes so, at least.)

He doesn't really try very hard in class, no one does, just kind of goofs off with some other football player, tries to get Ms. Sanders to let them make ice cream, and makes up puns using the names of different elements. (Favorite Peter O'Toole movie? "Lawrencium of Arabia!") And, yeah, Rachel kind of hates chemistry too but there is no way she'll get into NYU or Juliard with a B in honors chemistry so she suffers through it and tries not to doodle Finn's name in her notebook because he might look over at her (she hopes) and that would be, like, incredibly embarassing. Moreso than a slushy to the face.

It doesn't surprise her when, ten minutes later at rehearsal, Finn plops down next to her when Mr. Schu calls Kurt over and asks for help with the homework. She shrugs and says she hasn't done it yet, but offers him the mole map she made up for herself, complete with a doodle of a real mole animal at the center.

"Rachel Berry," he whines while rolling the paper between his freckled fingers. "What does a mole have anything to do with chemistry class?"

So he's not, like, the smartest person ever but Finn is cute and his smile disarms Rachel. She erases the faulty steps in her trigonometry homework, all his fault, and tries to contain her smile.

"A mole is a quantity, Finn, not an animal."

"I beg to differ," he comments, and his knee knocks against hers and jostles her homework. Rachel's pencil draws a line right through her unit circle. She glares at him. "Sorry," Finn interjects, "But a mole is an animal! I've seen them in my backyard."

He keeps bumping his knee against hers, trying to distract her when she won't answer. Finally, Rachel nearly groans in exasperation, and wonders when he got so comfortable with her that he decided he could be annoying and she would still put up with him. "Oh, my God! Are you five? Can I finish my homework? And I highly doubt you have seen a chemistry mole in your backyard!"

Finn just laughs. "Wanna bet?"

Rachel is tired the next morning, after staying up with Daddy and Papa to watch American Idol and swoon over Adam Lambert together. Her pink floral skirt rustles as she walks down the hallway. Opening her locker, her reflection in the tiny mirror there is obscured by something fluttering towards the ground.

Bending to pick up the folded piece of computer paper, Rachel reads the lime green Post-it stuck to the back. "Look what I found in my backyard!" is scrawled there, in tilting but surprisingly neat boy handwriting. She unfolds the paper, and laughs.

6.02 x 10^23 is written in big, block numbers. And peeking out from the "0"s are little doodled moles, their snouts high in the air and with little smiles on their faces. And underneath - "I expect my five dollars at rehearsal today, thank you very much."

Finn may not be the greatest student ever, but he's not too far behind, Rachel decides.

again, friend if you like! comments are ♥
