Lunch thoughts #17

Today's session with the counsellor was the last for a while, as she's fully booked until next month. I'm not entirely sure what to make of the progress made so far - I've discussed some stuff with her that I'd find difficulty telling anybody else, but besides the getting-issues-off-my-chest aspect I don't know if it's going anywhere. I've also ( Read more... )

People think that starting therapy is such a drastic step, but often it's quite underwhelming. My second to last therapist was of the "And how did you feel about that?" school...ask a lot of generic questions, nod your head a lot, get paid a lot of money. My last one practiced EMDR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMDR) and art therapy, which I found were more likely to actually have an effect on me and/or give me insight on how to deal with something than blahblahing about everything. I believe the EMDR works just because one relaxes one's normal approach for a while and does something odd like listens to sounds of the ocean while holding vibrating eggs which move at different rates in one's hands, while talking stream of consciousness about one's problem...so of course that helps to get one out of the usual pattern of thinking about something. Yeah, I'd probably put this councellor into the "And how did you feel about that?" school that you mentioned. Not that it's a bad thing.

The nightmares thing is a bit cliched (heh heh), but there you go! I've never read anything 100% convincing on dream interpretation, as most dream dictionaries tend to be too generic about the images somebody might see, but it would be nice to dream something different for a change. On the other hand, perhaps a human memory can be selective about which dreams/parts of dreams it chooses to hang onto at waking? Who knows. I'll do a google search at some point for that fuzzy-positivity thing you mentioned, it could be worth trying.
