Oh, thank you. Your comment makes me a little bit trembly, because, y'know, 20K of fic about a character generally disliked (with only a dash of the 'main' characters) is something of a risk - but this story caught me up. while making sure things can't get wrapped up nice and tight and perfect at the end - I'm a big fan of storylines where there's an openness at the end, because life isn't exactly neat, is it? :D
*nods* I hear you about the risk, but sometimes you just have to close your eyes and write the story that needs to be written.
And, well, I love Jonas anyway and I've been wanting someone to write this for a long time (I've written a few ficlets about Jonas and Langara and the Ori, but never got around to anything more) and I totally squeed when I saw you posting this because it is awesome!
Exactly - it's nice not wrapped up clean, but also not left hopelessly bleak.
Here via abyssinia's rec, and oh, awesome! I always found that tossed-off Langara mention frustrating, and I liked this a lot, in the sense of "like" that includes "wow, Jonas' life kind of sucks."
Tbh, how Jonas was treated in general really got to me, and I guess that his whole world was just dismissed in an instant--without even a mention of him!--was the final straw. This fic has been gestating for a few years now. :D
Also here via abyss' rec, and man, what a great look at how seriously Langara got fucked over by the writers. I love it that you brought Jonas back--saved him, in fact, because for all we know in canon he died defending Langara--and kept him alive to see Adria get defeated, and eventually, Langara freed.
This was really well done: both vivid and fairy-tale at the same time. Excellent.
I read on Gateworld, I think, that one of the showrunners has it as his personal canon that Jonas went underground on Langara and kept fighting, so I am hoping against hope that he didn't die in canon. *headdesk*
Your story is amazingly beautiful. I ache for Jonas, because he really does all he can do. SG-1 has done all they can, and he seems to accept that, in the end. I can imagine how hard that would be, after waiting so long and still holding out some hope they'd come. I'm torn between wanting a sequel and thinking that it's best just to leave it here, with Jonas's hope and the possibility of going home and seeing all his friends again.
You've fleshed out Jonas amazingly. He had a lot of potential we never saw realized. These events would make him a different person, indeed, but he keeps some of his key qualities: stubborn loyalty, a brilliant mind, and a willingness to sacrifice himself for others that wars with a deep desire to stay alive. You've created a very believable Kianna, and other characters as well. Sam feels very right: she's very concerned for Jonas, but she has a different perspective than he has, of necessity.
I kinda want to write more of this, but I think this is where it ends. Idk, maybe. Jonas' story, and his potential, is exactly why I adore him, I think. He never really got the padding the others did, and it was both a challenge and ridiculously fun to come up with that padding.
Very lovely. I love how you explore what Ori occupation means to the people of the planets they occupy. Using Jonas, who for all that he was SGC and still, to an extent, is SGC, works, especially since he is not Tau'ri and never was. I like the way you used the manipulations Nirrti did to him as a way for him to resist the Prior and to become a figure of resistance for his people, even if he didn't actively fight against them. I also love that you delineated the difference between physically fighting against them and using ideas to fight against the Ori. It is a nice one that highlights just how much more superior the Ori were in being able to suppress any physical revolt
( ... )
I've always thought it was something of a missed opportunity that they never did fully explore what it would be like living under Ori occupation - because that would've just been fascinating. So, here I am, giving it a shot. :D
And the section at the SGC is my effort to explain to myself, more than anyone else, why exactly Jonas was effectively abandoned by SG-1, with nothing more than a passing reference. So, yes. ♥♥
Very lovely character piece. Don't you just love it when a character study gets to twenty thousand words? :D Thank you. ♥♥
