I love how fleshed-out and real and bleak you made Langara and how sharp and harsh and cold the story was, to really make the reader feel the winter the characters were struggling in and to feel how stretched thin Jonas is.
The sheer impossibility of fighting the prior is so palpable, and I loved seeing the complicatedness of Jonas's relationships (especially Kianna) and the remnants of SG-1 that he can't let go of - which contrasted interestingly with his welcome "home" when after wanting them for so long, he isn't quite sure how to fit when he gets it. And also the inevitableness - Jonas doesn't want this - it's like he keeps running into these life-changing events (Daniel's dying, Nirrti, etc) without looking for them - and that's echoed here, with him just trying to escape and becoming a symbol (and both hating it and being aware of it).
You did a great job balancing the bleakness with the thread of hope, and keeping everything crisp and clear and just that bit other-worldly, all while making sure things can't get wrapped up nice and tight and perfect at the end.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the awesome fic (and I've been totally in the mood, recently, for exactly this sort of story).
Oh, thank you. Your comment makes me a little bit trembly, because, y'know, 20K of fic about a character generally disliked (with only a dash of the 'main' characters) is something of a risk - but this story caught me up. while making sure things can't get wrapped up nice and tight and perfect at the end - I'm a big fan of storylines where there's an openness at the end, because life isn't exactly neat, is it? :D
*nods* I hear you about the risk, but sometimes you just have to close your eyes and write the story that needs to be written.
And, well, I love Jonas anyway and I've been wanting someone to write this for a long time (I've written a few ficlets about Jonas and Langara and the Ori, but never got around to anything more) and I totally squeed when I saw you posting this because it is awesome!
Exactly - it's nice not wrapped up clean, but also not left hopelessly bleak.
