musings, and a question.

Today, I've been writing. (I know, what a surprise.) But yeah - I polished up Something like a Countdown and posted that, and that got me thinking: namely, about Jim and Bones. It's been something that's been nagging at me for a while now, actually, because I totally have a life and don't spend my time thinking about fandom at all :DI don't write ( Read more... )

watch me geek, analysing fandom, writing of a sort, star trekking, i now pair kirk/bones, my life

Hmm. Good question. My opinion on it varies, actually. I can see the whole 'movie events' maybe making one or both of them realize that there could be more than friendship between them, with the whole nearly dying and black hole killing billions of folks thing. I can see the UST and foundation for a relationship developing from their first meeting, with the stability and sort of co-dependence happening during the Academy Years. I can sometimes see it becoming more then but not as often as I see a more focused Captain Jim being ready for something like commitment and a real relationship, which is why I generally write first time post-movie events, I suppose ( ... )

No, I think you've rambled most of what's going on in my head, to be honest. :D (I'm bad at coherency.) I definitely do see these two as pretty much being each other's world, even if they're too dense to actually realise it - and it would take something pretty big (read: the Narada incident) to shock them into realising just what they mean to each other. Because they are stupid, stupid boys.

And I think that "fluid" is a good word to describe the likely transition - and that Captain Jim would probably need to come around before they actually managed to commit in any way, shape or form.

*sighs* Oh, boys.

*hugs* ♥

I'm pretty slutty flexible when it comes to the timing of them actually getting together. They come across onscreen as being so close that it's open to interpretation. Although I'm very fond of the idea of the movie events acting as a catalyst, especially to Jim, whether that's to take the first step beyond friendship or from fuckbuddies to an actual relationship. I think I've written this one most often and/or had it in the back of my head even if it's not directly addressed in the story.

Yeah, they seem so close on-screen sometimes that it's kinda like their relationship doesn't have to be defined, because it's just that. And yeah, I'm developing a fondness for the whole film-as-catalyst theory.

I think the beauty of a BFF to romantic relationship move is that it can be flexible. In my own series, I'm not even exactly sure when they got together, but in some ways it could be likened to the Harry/Ron ship in the HP fandom. Both have two boys/men who form a very close friendship. At any time, for any reason, that friendship could be tipped over the line into something more.

That line could be fluid (friends with benefits), irrevocable (life partners), or an "oh my god, what have we done" moment -- or anything in between. It's part of the reason I love writing the dynamic between friends that changes into something more. I've written first time and I've written established and I've written slow realization. They all have a different flavor and tempo an it just depends on what mood I'm in or want to set.

Er, did that help or just confuse? :)

Bit of both? :D And yeah, I think the reason I do adore these boys quite as much as I do is because of the whole BFF to romantic aspect.

but in some ways it could be likened to the Harry/Ron ship in the HP fandom
OT a bit, but I never got that ship much. Which might be a leetle hypocritical with my mad OTP Kirk/Bones-ness. :D ♥

I may lack creativity, but I don't see Jim having the confidence to go after Bones/accept Bones' offer (however, I think both are possible) more than BFF-dom until after he's got Enterprise-- I think he feels the need for a backup plan and at the same time it's some tangible proof that he has something to offer Bones, some way of proving he's worthy and not going anywhere (which is also proving it to himself because Jim will believe in everyone else first before he'd develop a really secure self image).

And ... I think they both know the wantneedgottahavecan'tlivewithout is there pretty much from the start, though the not/talking about it, not/admitting it to one's self in any detail can vary.

I'm stuck on 1st time fics for them-- I wish I could grow the green, green grass on your side of the fence.

Hmm, I suppose. I can imagine a kind of BFFery with a fair dose of half-joking come ons whilst a little drunk, but nothing serious until after the whole Narada fuckery. Hmm.

I rarely write first-time stuff anymore - unless, like I said, it's crack. I don't know. I think it's because I just find them too easy - like they're going to get together anyway, so why all the drama between points A and B? And I don't have the balls to write a "first-time" fic in which they don't get together, because I love my boys too much.

Ooh. I didn't think this was difficult until I stopped to, well, think about it. I also like to think of the movie's events as a catalyst for Jim and Bones, but I've read so much good fic that I can see it happening at any time. Although most of the ones I've read dealing with events earlier in the movie's timeline are smutty; Jim and Bones having anonymous sex on a road the night before the shuttle leaves Iowa, Jim jumping Bones in the bathroom of the shuttle to help him overcome his fear of dying a horrible space death, etc. I find that very interesting, because it shows that they're so close-knit in the film that it's easy (or hard) to interpret them anywhere on the relationship spectrum, from good friends all the way to committed life-partners (well, maybe not, but close). Plus there are all those intriguing years at the Academy that were glossed over. They could've been screwing like bunnies. Jim could've been screwing everyone else in sight because he's just so conflicted about Bones. We just don't know! Hurrah ( ... )

It's a weirdly difficult question, isn't it? Don't know what else to say because, yeah, that's a slightly more comprehensive/coherent summary of my thoughts on this matter than my original post. :D Yay! *facepalm*
