I Want My Llama TV! morgandawn May 4 2013, 03:40:08 UTC
As someone who is struggling to attend conventions for health reasons, you have just taken accessibility to a new level. Thank you!

I think it's a fabulous idea! In my past experience as an attending member, I sometime need to take a break from programming for an hour or so and retreat to my room for various reasons, and this would allow people to still see vids that have been wanting to see, and allow people to discuss them with others who were at the vidshow when you rejoin the con. It goes without saying that it's amazing for supporting members and hopefully, it might encourage more supporting memberships.

I think my only concern is that it might affect vidshow attendance, but I doubt it would be much overall - it's not the same experience as being in a room with people in a large screen. It offers an alternative for people who physically (or mentally) need to take breaks though, and that's awesome.

It also satisfies that "omg that one vid in that vid show you missed you have to see it" stuff that happens in room parties :)

YES. Yes indeed.

I remember missing premieres from vidshows that I had skipped in favor of panels, or to keep my head from exploding, and waiting to them it was pure torture. And even for non-premiering vids, having them all under the same roof, easily accessible, is brilliant.

I love the idea of this -- and like MD said, it takes accessibility to a new level, which is really great (and with my back issues, I can no longer do the "park my ass in a chair for the whole day and watch ALL the vidshows"). I think as a vidder my only question would be about updated vids -- a few times lately I've rushed to finish a premiering vid, and then later made tweaks to it. Would we be able to update the vid if so? Right now obviously we can't once they're on DVD, but that audience is smaller compared to an online audience, especially if it results in more supporting memberships, and I can see wishing that the streaming was maybe up to date if changes had been made. It's a small point, but something I was thinking about.

Great job, guys.

My initial reaction to this question is that once the vidshows are finalized they have to be considered finalized for the streaming as much as for the DVDs. Our tech staff have so much to do to prepare the con that we can't have them redoing work that's already been done to prepare each vidshow's stream, possibly multiple times if multiple vidders request file updates. (NB: the behind-the-scenes as I understand it for this project involves the creation of one giant video file per vidshow that's broken into chapters that allow the vid-by-vid navigation on the page for each vidshow.)

I'll defer to AbsoluteDestiny for any corrections to my understanding or assumptions there, but, administratively, I don't think it's likely that we could accommodate such changes. But, after all, the streaming site is a temporary thing of only slightly greater duration that the con itself. Downloadable files and/or your personal, ongoing streaming videos are surely the most important places to ensure that those post-submission tweaks get made, yeah? ;-)

Somehow I managed to completely read past the part that says things will only be up for a short time after the con. Durr. I thought they were staying up for a while. You'd never know I make my living as a copyeditor sometimes.

Even if it's not possible to reupload the vids themselves, is it possible to change the description/text? I'm thinking of things like adding links to release posts for premiering vids (or, probably easier, a link to a master post that lists all of the new vid release posts) or for adding vidder names to the Challenge show vids post-con, if they've ok'ed unveiling their names. If that makes sense? I don't think these things are necessary, exactly, but I can see them being useful/nice.

Cool! I would be totally happy to have my vids appear like this. No objections at all.
