I would consider co-moderating a panel aimed at first-year vidders (as I am one myself). Maybe call it, "So, I Just Started Vidding...Now What?" A bunch of other n00bs could congregate to talk about difficulties we face (learning tech, choosing a software, getting noticed, BNV intimidation *g*, bringing something original, finding our own style, etc) and swap tips/links/names that we've found helpful as we've gotten our footing. I see this not as a place where experienced vidders would be on the panel telling us what we should or shouldn't do (that can be another panel *g*), but a panel run by first-year vidders who are simply leading democratic conversation. Experienced vidders are welcome to attend, of course, but the focus is on we newbies.

Of course, it's entirely possible I'm the only new vidder attending VVC, in which case I'll just comfort myself :-D

I think that even if there aren't that many new vidders at vividcon, the notes from the panel would help people. There are also a lot of old-school vidders who when faced with the new digital methods feel very much new to everything.

Finally, and this is where I think the panel would be most important, it woud remind the BNVs what it's actually like being a new vidder. When you vid as long as some of us have it's very easy to take things for granted and then ignore the requests for help from those who were asking the same questions you asked when you started. That, to me, makes it relevant for everyone.

Do it! I'll cheerlead.

This would pair well with the "Newbies Rock" vidshow I offered to VJ. Love the idea.

Sigh, I need new glasses. I swear one of your examples was Xenabiology... Which would make an interesting femmeslash vidshow, but not from me. (I wouldn't know where to begin.)

...as they apply to vidding. This would be mainly an informational panel as I envision it, with a mod who has a legal background. although we could also have a discussion around people's fears/hopes on this issue and the larger issue of the pros/cons of being above the radar.

Are any of the people involved in the DIY festival coming? A panel discussion about that might be useful. (I know you don't want to do any panels, personally.) I just thought I remembered you saying something about someone maybe coming to Vividcon and now I just remembered that I have a terrible memory that should never be relied upon for anything.

You're right, there's an IP lawyer associated with the DIY Summit who sounded willing to lead such a panel if there's sufficient interest in it. I've asked elynross about how VVC would handle a guest speaker; it's up to the concom to decide. IMO, it would be worthwhile having the panel even without her, but much better with.
