Hi! So, you bought your membership and you've made your hotel reservation and you're already bidding on vidders in the VividCon Auction. Yep, everyone is gearing up: stretching, doing calesthenics, making Club Vivid vids and then other vids. Life is good. But you know what we need for this con? We need CONTENT, people! That's right! It's Programming Time! Woo hoo!
Starting right now we will be taking panel and vidshow suggestions on the mailing list and Vividcon livejournal. Please use this post to comment away with your suggestions and brainstorm off of one another's ideas. The vividcon mailing list is also a fine place to suggest and brainstorm.
Also starting now and all along the way as we solicit these suggestions, be thinking about whether there are any specific panels or vidshows you yourself would like to volunteer to run, whether they've been in the back of your mind for months or they just spring to life during the brainstorming process. Panel and show suggestions with volunteers attached have a better likelihood of being selected for the con. Don't be shy. If you suggested it or told us you wanted to do it in the past, please tell us again. If you're a first-time presenter, we'd be glad to try to pair you with a co-presenter if you like. Feel free to suggest things you're willing to VJ or moderate.
Once you are at the volunteering for sure stage with an idea, it's time to e-mail a description of what you propose to do directly to me at renenet@gmail.com. Just a few sentences would be fine. We are just looking for an idea of what you have in mind. Or you can wax rhapsodic about it to your heart's content. Be sure to tell me if the idea is something you're looking to do solo, if you've got a pre-arranged partner in crime, or if you're hoping there's another soul out there interested in a similar topic with whom you could collaborate.
We would like to have all of this suggesting AND volunteering done by Monday, April 23rd. That's about three weeks from now. Then the concom will take a week or two to sort through suggestions and offers and try to program a balanced overall slate of shows and panels for VividCon 2007. Then we'll respond to all VJ and moderator volunteers and let you all know what we've selected for programming.
So, to recap:
- Ideas! Have them! Share them in response to this post or on the mailing list! Brainstorm off of others' suggestions! Discuss! What panels and vidshows would YOU like to see at VividCon?
- Volunteer! Email me at renenet@gmail.com any time between now and April 23rd.
- No, that's pretty much it, I guess. Go, programming! Think: programming!
If you're new to the con, here's a quick overview of how VJing and moderating work. (You can get the big picture over at the
VividCon Programming FAQ, but note that some of the finer details in the FAQ may have shifted since we wrote it. If you read it in this post, it trumps the FAQ.)
Our themed vidshows are based on member suggestions and the VJ's choice. Themes can be anything from "Movie Vids" to "Villains" to "Illustrating Relationships" to "". After shows have been selected and announced, anyone can suggest a vid they feel fits into the theme, whether it's their own vid or someone else's (we'll open the call for suggestions after vidshows are selected), and then the VJ selects 10-14 vids for the theme based on the suggestions and their own ideas, and gives us the list of vids they want. The VJ has final say over their playlist (barring adjustments we need to make based on vid availability, duplicate requests from multiple VJs for the same vid, etc). We ask VJs to write the program guide blurbs for each of the vids they choose. For a list of past themed vidshows see
http://www.vividcon.com/vvcprogram_faq.shtml#themed Running the show at the con is not hard. You put a dvd into the machine and press play. *g* You do not need to cue tapes or disks, just ride the volume control. If you have the tech capability to make your own show DVD and are willing to, we certainly appreciate it, but it's not at all necessary -- we normally collect the vids and burn the disks ourselves; however, we will ask for VJs' help in acquiring vids we don't already have in our collection.
Our panels tend to fall into three categories: discussion, tech, and craft. Discussion panels are pretty much a free-for-all among the audience members, where the moderator referees and guides discussion within the topic. Tech panels involve a how-to lecture presented by the moderator (we can usually set up your laptop with a projector for demos if you like; a DVD player and screen are also available in the panel room), with questions from the audience. Craft panels usually fall in-between; the moderator often provides visual examples and lectures part of the time, as well as refereeing discussion. For a list of past themed vidshows see

Thanks for your suggestions and your volunteering! Let's make it another great con!
