Разговаривали на днях с интересными людьми о искусстве и мне вот какая идея пришла в голову. Кажется интересной, что я её решил тут записать ( Read more... )

movies - i think is totally a different area since whatever is considered "art" seems to have zero overlap with popular culture. for example I watched that Swedish director who is considered the best ever and it made no sense to me. So I don't even have an opinion on art movies.

And about Picasso - he's who I had in mind when I wrote it. There is no clear consensus that he wasn't good after a certain year. I think so, Dina does not :)

by overlap I don't mean that directors who make movies that I watch had seen Bergman. I mean that Bergman is not part of popular culture*, while Picasso is.

by that I mean the % of population who know their work and have opinions about it

Just can't let poor P. of the hook can't you!
You're definitely over-generalizing on the issue, just because your opinion about P's later work doesn't correspond to the art world's opinion doesn't mean there's a conspiracy of the sort you're claiming. Most artists (I'm going to stick to visual arts here) are judged on separate bodies of work and the stuff that is worse is admitted to be so (that doesn't mean it's worthless in the market but it is in the art circles). For example you study Gauguin's later paintings as opposed to his earlier ones. I'm sure his earlier painting will still fetch a nice sum at an auction but it won't be in art history book. Mr. P., on the other hand, later style is a pivotal turning point in art history and, arguably, his most important period (speak to an art professor or a connoisseur).
(I'm reading a book on P. right now btw..so don't get me started again!)

i didn't actually mean to raffle you up. I just wanted to write down my thought in a separate post (since i doubt i will ever look back at comments - this way it's like a diary). I saved it a while ago but didn't get to post it, just saw it sitting there.
what book on p are you reading?

btw - did you see that grisha thinks that his late period was poor? Also - for the sake of analogy - the last stone you step before falling of a cliff is also a 'pivotal turning point in your life' :)

So you have no personal opinion on his work at all?
