...to the lady sitting across from me at the teppanyaki restaurant tonight:

Ma'am,

Next time, just order the regular steak. There is no reason on Earth to spend the extra money on the fillet and then have it cooked "very well." If you are going to have them cook it down to leather anyway, just start with the cheap stuff. You'll never know the ( Read more... )

Her husband prattled on through the whole meal to their dinner companions about the restaurant he is opening soon. At first I was kind of interested, then he ordered his fillet "medium well." Which, I suppose, isn't as bad, but since he's the guy setting the menu, I'm not so sure it's a restaurant I want to try...

Oh, god, filet.

You had to say that, didn't you? Now I am NEVER going to be satisfied with smoked turkey tonight.

You're totally right, though. I guess if she wants to pay extra to ruin a perfectly good steak...

I most certainly can tell the difference. Okay, I don't order it very well, or even well, but I still want it cooked to a level that makes snobs want to vomit, and boy can I tell whether it's a good cut.

Fair point. Getting a nice cut of beef and then cremating it isn't cost effective, maybe she just doesn't know any better.

Tangent: I've never been able to stomach anything with pink in the middle after I went to France and ordered steak medium. It practically moo'd back at me, and I was very ill afterwards.

If she saved up enough she could get a better kitchen floor and wouldn't need the shoes at all...
