Art of Eye Terror

A while back I signed up for Waldenbooks' e-mail discount program, the thing they're replacing the Preferred Reader's card program I've been part of and loved for 16 years with. Today I received a coupon for 30% off one book, good from 4/28 -5/1. (Whereas my card gives me 10% off anything anytime, or at least it will until May is over and ( Read more... )

I had a similar reaction when I saw the first volume of GetBackers. I love the anime style. It's so clean and sleek, which is why I think opening the manga and finding a style so rough and pinched was so jarringly disappointing.

I feel the same way. I really love the clean look of the anime.

I reserved the first volume of GetBackers and flipped through it went it came in and it was baaad. I loved the anime but the manga is full of too much fan service.

Yay for Hands Off! I got that coupon too but the only Waldenbooks closed because a Borders is opening at the same mall on May 6.

I should be getting Hands Off vol 3 in the mail soon, so I'm curious as to how the series go. Eerie Queerie started off pretty strong but it kinda went a little crazy in some of the latter volumes.

I thought volume 2 was a bit weak yet still enjoyed it. Volume 3 is very good and still on target. I'm hopeful the series will keep going strong.

The art in the GetBackers manga didn't really appeal to me, but I could have lived with it. What I found really off-putting was the dialogue. The dialogue seemed to be mostly rendered in dialect that made everybody sound like an urban street thug. They didn't sound like that in the anime. I guess I'm just so uncool that I couldn't restrain myself from wanting to slap them and tell them to speak correctly.

The other Sandy

P.S. -- Strangely, I had a similar reaction to Mickey Mouse as a child. When my voice sounded like that, my mom would give me an antihistamine and tell me to blow my nose. I kept waiting for Mickey to take his antihistamines and blow his nose, but he never did. It drove me crazy.

Translation can go like that. Since the version of the anime I see has a fansub, there are some formal constructions and some street stuff, not the mass urban thug speak in the manga. In my head, the fansub is how they talk.

This stinks! I did not realize they were doing away with the Preferred Reader completely. This absolutely sucks!

On a completely different note... discountanimedvd.com always has their manga at 25% off cover price and if you buy over $100 at a time there's no shipping cost. Guess I'll be shopping there even more than usual.

Thanks for the link!

(Though $100 in one shot is way too big a splurge for my resources.)

Yeah, it is a bit much. I keep a jar and when I have a couple extra dollars I put it in there, when it reaches $100 I get online and spend it.

Or at least I used to... with the hubby deployed we have enough extra spending money that I don't have to save up for a couple months to spend it. I'd rather have him home though *sigh*
