My mind goes to strange places sometimes. Recently it’s been dwelling on a fantasy series I hadn’t read in years.
Janet Morris’ Tempus stories started in Thieves’ World, one of those jam anthology series that had been so prevalent in the ‘80s. The characters in her short stories here were racist, misogynist mercenaries. Tempus is an avatar of the

I feel that Cherryh is a slasher at heart. *g*
Anyway, to make it short…

The other ones I stayed with were Niko's, and the thief (the one with all the knives), and Tempus's.
Niko's stories about broke my brain, trying to merge "child-fucker" and "hero-warrior" into one person.
When I run out of other things to do, I'd like to track those stories down again. I had some thoughts about the gals in the stories, about the ones that were clearly either madonna or whore, and the ones who were not.
Didn't they (tptb) say that they intended Sanctuary to be sort of the "armpit of the Empire" and instead it morphed into more "the Empire's arsehole", not exactly as they had intended?

Shadowspawn? He was originally my favorite character in the series.
Characters kept talking about what an incredible warrior Niko was, but I didn't see much of that. Mainly I saw him getting his ass whipped, making stupid mistakes he had to be rescued from, and lusting after Roxanne and girls who barely had breasts.
In Morris' stable of characters here, I can't really think of any madonna women. They all seem to fall into "bitches and whores."

Reading Zelazny's Amber series, my favorite character was Random, Corwin's sidekick-y brother. But Zelazny cheated me there, by obviously loving him just as much as I did.

The Tempus stories with rife with slash potential but 98% of the characters were homophobic bastards.
I like Cherryh's work because she puts characters I would like in star positions, giving them a lot of attention.
