I now have a DVD copy of Saiyuki: Requiem for the One Not Chosen! Extra coolness is that I've now seen an official subtitled edition and the English dub in addition to the crackheaded translation of a translation copy I had on VHS. One take on what Dougan would've done with Sanzo 'til then. I can't tell you if I liked it or not because I haven't seen Requiem yet (not that it stops me from spoiling myself silly, but what ever does?).

If Dougan defeated the Sanzo party and didn't mind that Sanzo hated him as long as he could have Sanzo, this is totally how it could have gone.

Yeah, I had a big Squeeeeee! moment when we first see the Sanzo party and there's Gojyo's truly red hair blowing in the breeze.
