"Breathe," Not "Breath"

The professional manga translations really need better proofreaders. I keep catching errors in Tokyopop's Eerie Queerie! and Saiyuki.

Like what? I make a sucky proof-reader since I just correct the errors in my head without making a note of them. If it's a huge error, I'll notice it, but in other-wise well written text I just gloss it over.

"Breath" when it should be "breathe" is very common. Some small words are left out. In Saiyuki vol. 2 Shuei's name doesn't always have the same number of U's. Small things like that.

I can understand the occaisional error, but Tokyopop is just terrible when it comes to this. Their sampler (volume 2) from Suncoast was riddled with errors, and it certainly didn't make me want to try too many new Tokyopop titles.

I prefer Tokyopop's presentation to, say, Viz's, and the original material is good, but some of the translation is just sloppy. It makes things difficult.

I think this is symptomatic of a problem with publishing houses in general, not just the manga publishers. I think they let spellcheck do their proofreading for them now. I recently caught an instance of 'conscience' when the writer meant 'conscious' in a professionally published novel. That's an error I see in fanfic all the time (like the breath/breathe thing). I just love it when a character becomes 'unconscience.'
