I got news Thursday that a college friend in Pittsburgh has only weeks to live. The tumor they'd removed came back quickly with a vengeance. She's the person who got me into internet slash fic because in college in the early 90s I'd loan her so many slashy books. It seems to me travel has become so hard even when it's not under duress, and here you have multiple stressors added to that. I wish I could offer some really helpful comments but all I have to offer is sympathetic listening.

It's appreciated. Thank you.

She'd been suffering for months before she had the initial tumor surgery. (Afterward: "It's a good thing I decided I was never having children, because it's impossible now!") She'd been in hospice since, had a colostomy bag since her surgery, getting chemo, thought she was getting better. She was scheduled for more chemo the day she got this new terrible news.

Thank you.

We are unfortunately in an age in which we're expected to feel blessed for being forced to do everything for ourselves on the internet instead of having professional experts with knowledge and connections who specialize in things figure it out for us. Progress!

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I hope you can work out getting to see her before she passes.

That said, I understand your concerns about traveling alone in winter to a city you're no longer familiar with. Nothing is ever easy these days.

Best of luck.
