The Trinity Blood manga is continuing the rise in quality that started with volume III. Volume V has plot, drama, humor, and big things at stake for almost all the characters involved. I still want to punch Esther, though.
I guess I should read the manga. Hell, I wanted to punch Esther just from watching the anime. I was cheering Abel on in the episode where he slapped the crap outta her.
The plots between the manga and anime have some parallels in places, so manga Abel slaps the crap out of manga Esther too, with equally satisfying results. So far manga Esther is less of a special snowflake in story terms than anime Esther. For example, manga Esther isn't immediately brought into AX and individually introduced to everyone as anime Esther was.
Volume I had more super-deformed moments than I like, and volume II had inconsistent story quality, especially in the part that introduces Leon, but both had some great moments of Abel and Tres friendship and badassery. The series made a major leap forward in quality with volume III and has kept on that way for all I've seen since.
