I had about the same reaction the first time I saw it too. @_@ (Though I didn't know they were to it on Adult Swim yet, I keep missing them.)
The series, and the finale in particular, suffers from a couple of different factors. It's based off of one plotline of the manga, which was based of two plotlines in the original novel series, which is still unfinished. ^^; So there are inconsistencies and viewers miss out on a lot of important background details. That's what smacks you around hardest in the finale---sci-fi may run on a bit of hand-wavium but there's usually a bullshit explanation that goes with it. And they pretty much cut that out of the anime's end completely. x_x
The character info in the series' wiki article helped me sort some things out. The bits on the Nightroad family specifically were pretty useful; hope that helps!
So the colonists who returned had become vampires from the Bacillus?
I'm also wondering how the battle between Cain and Abel ended and when Ion stopped being obsessed with Esther to the point that he could actually decide to go after the Contra Mundi. I have guesses on some of my questions but it often doesn't pay to guess with anime. *g*
It was weird but it was kinda cool. I found myself sitting their going OMG!WTF? Why did Ion go off with Abel? I thought his squeaky behind would end up with Ester who by the way seems to be shacking up with the Pope? Every thing is really weird, but hopefully the novels will clear things up for me.
It looked great, but I was left wondering how the Cain and Abel battle ended and when Ion grew a pair (and a brain). The writers could have cut Esther out of the series completely and I would have been very happy.
A friend tells me that the novel series is unfinished, so that might not help out that much....
Yeah the author died in 2005 just before he finished the third one I think.
Anywho, Esther is just a huge ass Mary-Sue who really wasn't needed. There were so many characters from the original series that could have replaced her. She doesn't have any awesome powers. The only thing she has is that freaking scar.
But at least she didn't end up with Abel. That would have been horrifying.
I was really worried the creators would try to pair her with Abel--the images in the closer made it look very possible--then felt a great relief that he seemed to see her as a little sister.
By the way, great going on distracting Abel and letting Cain kill him, Esther.
The power of confusion is strong is this series, and the ending episode is a complete WTF, but some elements of the show I just love. Dress, the opening theme, I love, and the music throughout the series is wonderful. I'll have to track down the soundtrack.
The characters are nice eye candy, if inconsistent. Tres and the other vatican agents are the most interesting to me. Esther is a waste of space, but at least there are other female characters of interest.
So much potential, too bad the resulting show was so hit and miss.

I know. The waste of potential here kills me.
