georgetown and hp collide; or, virginia's international relations professor is serious win

Oh man. A few minutes ago, I was looking up books to buy for the spring semester. I got to GOVT-006 International Relations -- and sandwiched between the titles like Global Political Economy and International Politics was this little gem.

I had to run it through a Google search just to make sure that my eyes weren't deceiving me. I mean, Harry ( Read more... )

Oh, that's marvellous!

I slightly object to the comment of the reviewer who said "In a post-9/11 world, international relations is a critical area of inquiry" - international relations has always been a critical area of inquiry, surely?

It sounds like that class is going to tonnes of fun, though, and I am quite quite jealous!

Perhaps what the reviewer was trying to say is that international relations has just become a greater point of focus since 9/11? Anyway, I should think that's it has always been a most essential subject!

GOVT-006 has a bit of an awful reputation among the students, largely because it's a course concerning international relations theory -- objectively, I can understand why that might be boring, but personally, I don't see how it can be. xD /nerd

Okay. So---

I'll have to be in DC sometime in the future and willmust sneak into this class.

You know, to me the Ministry of Magic reminded me more of the League of Nations. How?

Well, Dumbledore pleading with the Ministry that the threat is real, Voldemort is back and killing Muggles is kinda similar to:

Fmr. Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I pleading to the League of Nations that Italian Dicator Benito Mussolini is killing his people and invading the country and he needs help(the Second Italo-Abyssinian War late 1930 to the end of WWII-ish) most notably, the Italians used mustard gas on the Ethiopians. The League of Nations practically sat around and did nothing out of fear of Mussolini and what he could do to them granted even though, apparently, they had the forces necessary to fight him back.

Or this just could be me D:...(Or it could be likened to Canadian Peacekeeper Roméo Dallaire pleading with the UN about Rwanda.)

hey, I'm all for a UMN--United Magical Nations sitting around and such. Yay internationalismy stuff

Ooh, that's a very nice comparison -- that, or just governments in general refusing to acknowledge blatantly obvious things. :/

Hee, I'll be sure to report back to LJ with any interesting excerpts or class discussions based on the book. I can't wait to read it!

Now the important question is: has my professor ever heard of this thing called fandom? *grins*

Ooh! I miss my photography class from high school -- one of the few things worth remembering about that awful place -- and the whole process of feedback and constructive criticism that went along with it, so I shall definitely check it out.

Hee, awesome. :D :D

Did you ever see the political cartoon re. WWII in which Fudge was Chamberlain and Voldemort Hitler? Apt. My history teacher discussed the implications of extending the metaphor for half a class once -- got a bit sticky (if by "sticky" you mean "hilarious", and I do) when we got into Dumbledore-being-gay territory ...

I haven't, but I imagine that it would be quite entertaining. x)

when we got into Dumbledore-being-gay territory ...

I feel like fandom would have many constructive things to say about that!

You see, really, Hitler started WWII because he was in love with Winston Churchill.

That -- that's just asking for someone to write a really awful revisionist history slash fic novel. (Maybe the folks over at historic_slash can help us out?)
