The following morning, Jonghyun got on the bus per usual, giving the passengers a quick scan before noticing that Eunsook was not one of them. Sighing softly, he sat down and crossed his legs, turning so he could look out of the window and keep an eye out for something familiar. Drumming his fingers on his knee, he couldn’t help but wonder what kind of person Eunsook was now; he remembered her being quiet and soft spoken but always kind, and alright he had never talked to her personally so maybe it was kind of strange that he had a crush on her but he couldn’t help it. There was just something honest and humble about her that he genuinely liked.

He saw the sign of the book store that Eunsook had fled into the day before and reached up to pull the cord to request the stop, standing as the bus slowed down. Tugging the hem of his shirt down a bit, glad he had the first part of the day off so he didn’t look like a dork in his uniform, he hopped off of the bus and stared up at the sign, frowning a bit.

It was a worn down book store, second hand, and one that Jonghyun had never been into before. Not that he frequented book stores, but you know, in the off chance he ever went to one this particular store wasn’t even in his sights. The windows were dusty and the sign was crooked, but there were people milling about inside and he glanced down at the book before letting out a soft breath.

“Alright Jonghyun. You got this.”

The door chimed softly when he opened it, and a friendly face greeted him from behind the register. He was an older gentleman and Jonghyun bowed immediately, walking up to the counter and offering a slightly awkward smile.

“I’m looking for…” Shit, what should he say? Eunsook? Miss Lee? What if she was married? “Uh, someone left this book on the bus yesterday and I saw her come in here.” Perfect. Extra points for thinking on the spot, Jonghyun. “I’d like to return it.” Dashing smile, check.

“Ahh,” the man smiled and looked down at the book, nodding. He tapped the counter once before turning around and calling out, “Eunsook! A young man is here to see you.”

If Jonghyun’s heart could stop beating and he could still be alive, well, it pretty much happened. His whole body tensed as Eunsook came out of the back of the book store, her eyes crinkled at the corners with her smile as she greeted the man (who now looked suspiciously like her father), and when she turned to look at Jonghyun, he immediately glanced away and held out the book for her.

Please don’t recognize me.

“A-Ah,” the book was taken out of his grasp gently, delicately, and Eunsook’s voice was soft as she spoke. “Thank you.”

He chanced a glance out of the corner of his eye and saw her cheeks dusting in a blush, a giggle leaving her lips, as she continued, “I didn’t mean to run off in such a hurry yesterday… Is your cheek alright?”

“Huh?” Jonghyun turned a rather dumb look towards her, his hand moving up to his cheek where she had struck him with her purse. It was a bit tender but it hadn’t bruised, and he cleared his throat and nodded his head, surprised that she remembered him. “Er, yeah! Yeah. I’m fine. It’s - it’s ok.”

“Oh good,” she breathed in relief, a hand fluttering over her chest. Jonghyun’s eyes were drawn to the action and he couldn’t help but notice that she had definitely… developed, over the years, and her conservative blouse did nothing to hide her assets. “I don’t know why I reacted like I did.”

Jonghyun’s eyes shot up to her face and he gave a quirky smile, hoping she didn’t notice him staring, “Oh well, you know, I don’t blame you. There’s lots of boobs out there.”

Eunsook blinked.

Jonghyun’s throat went dry. “Idiots! Boobs as in idiots. You know… synonym.”

She laughed, nodding her head. “Ah! I get it.” She nudged his arm gently, “You’re funny.”

“Ahaha,” he gave an awkward laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. “I guess.” Was she really that dense?

“Thank you for returning my book,” Eunsook smiled and held it to her chest, the swell of her cleavage now visible and making sweat drip down the side of Jonghyun’s neck. “I haven’t finished it yet and I’d be really disappointed if I lost it. I can’t find another one in the city!”

“I bet it’s hard to find nice breasts around here,” he amended.

Her head tilted and she squinted her eyes a bit.

“Books! Books. Hard to find nice books… in English. English books. Books written in the English language.”

Laughing again, she nodded and tucked her hair behind her ear; it was straight today, and let down, and it was so pretty and soft-looking… “It is hard, I usually have to special order them from the internet.”

“So you speak English?” Jonghyun inquired, trying to keep his eyes trained on something other than her chest. Like her hair, or her cute front teeth when she smiled.

“I do! I study it at the university,” she shrugged, though it was obvious she was proud. “I’d like to study abroad one day.”

Jonghyun nodded and hummed in approval, and Eunsook opened her mouth to say something else, but the door opened and chimed and a customer entered the shop. Eunsook looked over Jonghyun’s shoulder and gave him a small, shy smile, before setting the book down on the counter.

“I need to get back to work…”

“Oh, yeah,” Jonghyun patted his thighs idly before nodding and taking a step back. “Well, it was nice talking to you, Eunsook nuna. See you around.” He left before she could say anything, but he smirked when he saw her reflection in the glass of the door.

She looked absolutely befuddled.

Later that evening Jonghyun was on the bus on his way home after his shift at the deli, ear buds plugged in as he listened to the radio, tapping his foot along to the music as the bus rocked him into a light slumber. He’d had a considerably better day, and he kept replaying his conversation with Eunsook in his head over and over again. He couldn’t believe that he’d actually talked to her - he couldn’t believe how amazing she was. She was just as kind and gentile as he remembered her to be and could it really be that perfect?

The bus passed by her book shop and he opened his eyes to look at the building, seeing Eunsook exit the shop and lock up for the night. He brightened and sat up, briefly contemplating getting off and walking her home - but a younger guy walked up to her and greeted her, kissing her cheek and hugging her before they walked off arm-in-arm.

Jonghyun slumped down a bit, frowning as the bus turned around the corner and the couple disappeared from sight. His heart sank into the pit of his stomach and he sighed, running a hand through his hair.

Of course… how could he be so stupid? After two years… She’s amazing. Why wouldn’t she have a boyfriend? His head tilted back against the seat and he stared at the fluorescent lights of the bus for a few seconds before closing his eyes, watching the colors explode behind his lids, reds and blacks morphing and melting into each other as his fingers fiddled with the string of his head phones.

Of course he’d be too late.

--

“How’d it go?” Gwiboon asked as soon as Jonghyun walked in the front door.

He didn’t answer as he emptied his pockets onto the kitchen table and took off his jacket, throwing it over a chair and making his way towards his bedroom. He heard Gwiboon following after him, the pitter patter of her slippers coming down the wood floor of the hallway somewhat calming as he went into his bedroom and started to strip down.

“Hey asshole, I asked you how it went,” Gwiboon said, leaning in the door frame. Her voice was a lot softer than her words intended it to be.

“She has a boyfriend,” Jonghyun said, once he was in his boxers, as he slid under his covers and pulled them up to his chin.

Silence fell between them and Gwiboon licked her lips, before she moved into his room and sat on the edge of his bed. “Oh… Oppa.”

“It’s fine,” he shrugged and rolled away from her. “She’s a great girl, she deserves to be in a relationship with a good guy.”

“You are so bitter,” Gwiboon pinched his side, and Jonghyun grunted and swatted at her hand.

“Go away, brat.”

“No way,” she lifted the blankets and snuggled down into Jonghyun’s side, wrapping her tiny arms around his waist as she nuzzled into his neck. “I’m comforting you.”

“This is incest,” Jonghyun groused as he tried to wriggle away from her.

“You’re the pervert, not me,” Gwiboon pinched him again and he whined, kicking at her feet with his own. “Don’t give up~” she sang, before jabbing his shin with her toe nail. “You and Eunsook unnie are meant to be together!”

Jonghyun stopped rubbing his shin and looked down at Gwiboon with an arched brow, “Really? Why?”

Gwiboon cupped her breasts and pushed them up a bit, making them swell, “Because she’s stacked.”

Jonghyun pushed Gwiboon until she landed on the floor, “Get out of my bed.”

Giggling, Gwiboon pranced out of Jonghyun’s room, “Go get her, tiger~”

Pulling his pillow over his face, Jonghyun sighed loudly. “I hate my life."
