Beep. Beep. Beep.

Jonghyun reached a hand out from under the covers to hit the snooze button on his alarm clock, yawning loudly as he sat up and ran a hand through his hair. It was still blond at the tips but he found he rather liked it; with the two jobs he had, he managed to find a salon to actually do the upkeep on the hair and make it look like less of an accident (it was the last time he was getting drunk with his cousin and letting him touch his hair) and more like it was done on purpose.

Two years after dropping out of high school and throwing himself into work, Jonghyun had managed to get himself a modest, two-bedroom apartment in the big city. He sent checks to his mother to help her pay with rent as well as keep up on Gwiboon’s studies; she was close to graduating high school and with her grades, college was bound to happen and no matter how many scholarships she had already garnered under her belt, college was still going to cost something.

He went through the droll routine of showering and getting dressed for his first job of the day, a cashier at the local grocery store. He’d much rather be in a department where he didn’t have to deal with customers but as it were, he got decent pay and the customers weren’t really all that bad. He didn’t have a car but the bus trips were easy and quick, and he almost always had his iPod on hand, ear buds plugged into his ears as he drowned out the world around him.

The sound of the scanner accepting his bus pass barely registered in his brain as he boarded, shuffling his way towards the back where the second door was. Settling down in a rather empty area, he closed his eyes and lost himself in whatever talk show was on the podcast he’d settled on. The motion of the bus rocking was soothing, and he had to keep opening his eyes every now and again to keep himself awake; however, the next passenger that boarded caught his attention and he choked on his own spit, coughing and hacking and turning away, his cheeks red as he pounded on his chest.

Once calm, he chanced a peek at the woman who had sat in the middle of the bus. Her long hair was wavy and pulled off to the side in a low ponytail, gleaming chestnut in the early sunlight. She was smiling peacefully and reading a book, wearing modest Sunday clothes as she held her satchel close to her body with her free hand, legs crossed, sparkly black flats peeking out from the long-ish hem of her black slacks.

Eunsook.

Jonghyun sunk down in his seat a bit and scrunched as he turned away from her, hoping she wouldn’t see him or recognize him or get a whiff of him because he was pretty sure he forgot to put on deodorant this morning. Turning his head in the slightest, he stole another look at her, feeling his heart leap into his throat in a very cliché manner. Her eyes were lifted and she was looking out of the window at the passing scenery, face absent of any make-up and still just as stunning as he remembered her, if not even more beautiful with the passing of womanhood. Her cheeks had raised a bit and her eyes had gotten wiser, and as she tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear he quickly scanned both of her hands for a ring - upon finding them both blank of anything, even bare of nail polish, he let out a soft breath.

Could he really be so lucky?

The bus slowed to a stop and Eunsook stood up, putting her book into her satchel and slinging the purse over her shoulder. Jonghyun’s body tensed - he should say something, shouldn’t he? He should talk to her, say hello, maybe even walk her to where she’s going? He opened his mouth to speak and he braced his knees to stand up when Eunsook started to walk towards the door he was sitting by… and then all of a sudden the air was knocked out of his chest and his lap was very full of a squealing, blushing Eunsook.

The bus had suddenly halted and Eunsook had lost her footing and, unable to grip onto anything, had sailed into Jonghyun’s lap. One hand of his went to her back and the other curled around the underside of her knee, ending with him cradling the older woman in his lap, both of them frozen and staring at each other for a full ten seconds before Eunsook squealed and hit Jonghyun over the head with her purse, sprinting out of the bus and down the sidewalk.

It took Jonghyun about thirty seconds to register which way was up when he opened his eyes, rubbing his cheek and groaning in pain. He blinked blearily down at his lap and found the book Eunsook had been reading, and before he could get up and chase after her (which wasn’t a great idea in the first place), the bus took off again and he saw Eunsook disappear into a small book store.

Sinking into his seat, he tried to ignore the throbbing in his head as he rubbed his cheek and stared down at the book, which had an English title, and then dropped his head back against the seat.

Of course this was how he would meet the love of his life.

--

“Today sucks.” Jonghyun announced as he entered the break room at the grocery store.

The only person in there was the Taiwanese janitor who didn’t speak a lick of Korean, and Jonghyun sighed as he sat down at the table and buried his face in his arms, sniffling lightly.

--

A lady came through Jonghyun’s check out during the rush time and tried to insist that she had a pretty daughter that Jonghyun could date; she showed him a picture of her daughter on her cell phone and Jonghyun couldn’t think of a polite way to tell her he wasn’t into beastiality, so instead he hurried up the scanning and smiled brightly and talked over her, telling her the total of her grocery and loudly counting back her change and then waving and bidding her goodbye.

“Today sucks,” he muttered under his breath as the woman grabbed her groceries and left, promising next time she would bring her daughter with her next time.

--

By the time Jonghyun’s shift ended and he got onto the bus to head to his second job as a cashier in the sandwich shop, he really just wanted to go home. He sunk down in his seat and stared at the book Eunsook had left in his lap and wondered if she was on the bus at that time every morning and if he had managed to overlook her every time, or if she had just happened to be on the bus when he was. Whichever it was, Jonghyun needed to return this book to her and maybe get back in her good graces… not that he was in her good graces to begin with.

The last she saw of him he was dropping out of school and had conducted a fanfare on top of the school roof.

He was a loser, he just had to face it. Eunsook probably had an amazing job and was really successful and she probably had a handsome boyfriend or hell, maybe she was already betrothed or whatever. Maybe she was super religious and would be a virgin until marriage. Not that it mattered…

Jonghyun smacked himself in the forehead with the spine of the book, grunting and hunching over his knees as he ran a hand through his hair.

There was only one logical thing to do.

He pulled out his cell phone and took in a steadying breath, before hitting speed dial number three.

--

When he got home to his apartment that night, his little sister was already there, lounging on the sofa and watching television. He dropped his keys and wallet (as well as Eunsook’s book) on the kitchen table and moved to the fridge to grab a beer, not even bothering with a greeting as he started to rifle through drawers for a bottle opener.

“So who is she?” Gwiboon asked from the couch.

“Girl from high school,” Jonghyun grunted, bending a little bit to squint as he pushed aside various spatulas and plastic spoons in a drawer. “Ran into her on the bus. She dropped her book in my lap and then ran.”

“Sounds weird,” Gwiboon’s nose was probably wrinkled and her upper lip was probably curled, which in actuality is a lot cuter than it sounds. “Why didn’t you just follow her and give her the book back?”

“She smacked me with her purse, she thought I was some sort of pervert,” Jonghyun said, before shutting the drawer and setting his beer on the counter, narrowing his eyes and staring at it, willing the top to just pop off on its own.

“Well you are,” Gwiboon stated matter-of-factly, as she got up off of the couch and moved into the kitchen. She grabbed the beer and put the cap on the edge of the counter and used the leverage to pop it off, handing the opened bottle to her brother, before folding her arms over her chest.

Jonghyun loved his sister more than anything. He would do anything for her - give her money, give her the clothes off of his back, give her a place to live. But she could be a real brat and in moments like these, all he really wanted to do was pull on her hair and punch her in the boob.

“I wasn’t being a pervert though,” Jonghyun groused, taking a swig of his beer. “I caught her from falling. Saved her.” He harrumphed, folding an arm over his chest.

Gwiboon picked up the book from the table, looking over it, “She knows English? Oh Jjong she’s way out of your league.” She snorted and set the book down, flipping through the pages.

“I know English!” Jonghyun retorted, huffy.

The younger girl arched a brow, before rolling her eyes. “I’m not even going to touch on that subject.” She pushed the book away, before sitting down in the chair. “So give the book back to her.”

“I’ve never seen her on that bus before,” Jonghyun leaned against the counter. “I don’t know if it was just a fluke that she was on it yesterday…”

“Well you saw where she got off, so why don’t you get off there tomorrow at around that time and see if she’s there?” Gwiboon flipped her hair over her shoulders, scoffing. “You need to watch more romance movies.”

“Life isn’t a fairy tale, sis,” Jonghyun chuckled and scratched the side of his head. “But I’ll give that a try.”

Gwiboon stood up and nodded, punching Jonghyun in the arm lightly, “Atta boy!”

He shoved her down the hallway, “Go to bed.”

She disappeared into the second bedroom and Jonghyun glanced down at the book, staring at the cover and running his fingers over the letters.

“Romance movies, huh?” he chuckled, picking up the book and setting his empty beer bottle on the counter, heading down to his bedroom. “Maybe I should read more romance novels.”

“Those are trash, too!” Gwiboon piped up from her room.

“Put a sock in it.” Jonghyun shoved a chair underneath the handle of her door.
