can rosin get too old to use?

The rosin that came with my violin, it seems to be rock hard and unless I cut at it with a blade, it doesn't seem to deposit much rosin on my bow. My violin teacher's rosin has a deep groove cut into it, either she's had it a long time or plays an awful lot. idk
